I liked that interview. Sometimes I find her a little know it all, but I think it's just because she's direct in interviews. Anyway, I definitely appreciate the sanity in recognizing that a kid can just be a kid.
I would like to hear if she has a good relationship with her ex-husband and does he see their child?

The way I remember reading is that she left him just up and out of the blue, and he was begging her to reconsider. Makes me think she caught him cheating.

And I've always had the impression that she wanted to move on up. I think she's rather fake, mercenary, calculating and ambitious. As well as something of a liar. IIRC, she was caught out with something involving her pregnancy or childbirth but 3 days of insomnia is frying my brain, so perhaps I'm just muddled.

She fessed up herself that she'd had a C-section with her first baby, but had let people think she'd delivered naturally. She had felt ashamed that she had "failed" at natural childbirth. Not exactly Watergate (nobody's business at all, IMO).
I read he was majorly insecure about her being successful in movies and him not being. Kate mentioned once that he used to tell her what movies to do, which is why she did Quills even though she didn't dig it.

I remember reading that he threw a hissyfit when he wasn't allowed in Harrod's because he was dressed rather sloppy and pulled the, "Hell, don't you know who I AM!" shit, because at the time, there were ads in the window for Titanic.

I don't think he cheated. I think they were too young, playing house and realized they were way over their head. He was married to a big movie star and not really 25. I thought Kate Winslet was the Holy Gal who could do no wrong? Come on, how is being ambitious bad?

I always was under the impression that Kate and Jim's (that is his name, right?) relationship fell apart in a less than dramatic fashion. Like atpeacewithme said, I always got the impression that they got married too young, had a kid and realized that they wanted different things in life. I think that they have a pretty decent relationship as far as that sort of thing goes, so I don't get the impression that something awful happened to end their marriage.
No doubt Kate Winslet is incredibly ambitious. I think her "down to earth" act is an act, but I also don't think she is hiding some huge, insecure bitch attitude behind a earthy facade. I just think she is very aware of how she comes across and she knows that a lot of her popularity comes from her "normal gal" attitude. The thing is, fake or not, it is refreshing to hear someone talk about their body insecurities who obviously has had some experience where that sort of thing is concerned.
This? Is awesome! If ever there was an opportunity to try to bend the rules, it is when you are plastered all over the store windows as the star of one of the biggest movies of all time!

I remember Kate saying in an interview that there was one time where she, Jim, and Sam were all talking in their (Kate's & Sam's) kitchen. Kate said she never imagined that she, her ex-husband, and her husband would all be able to get along as well as they do, and the fact that they do get along so well is quite a relief to her.

I think I (would) quite like her as a person, but I am probably the voice of dissent in that her acting leaves me cold and always has done. With one exception; Jude.
I was pretty disappointed when she and her first hubby split up (yep, ThursdayNext, he's a Jim...Threapleton or similar, I believe) because she looked divine on her wedding day and had a pie 'n' mash reception some place or other. But I didn't ever get the impression it was an acrimonious split, that's sad if it was.
I was also disappointed in her new choice of husband, as I've met Sam Mendes and he was a complete arsehole (and rather unfortunate-looking, imho). But each to their own etc.

My impression, however, is of a much more calculating, mercenary personality. I can't explain why but that's the vibe I get off her. And it's that vibe *when combined* with the ambitiousness which makes me less than keen on her. That said, I do like her refusal to submit to Hollywood's waif/anorexic expectations for women.
