1) Nero's plan was to destroy the Federation, with Vulcan and Earth first. By destroying the Klingon armada, the Klingon homeworld would be vulnerable. The black hole also dropped the Naruda in Klingon space 25 years earlier. It's where Kirk's father was killed. Oh, right! And Spock's ship would have been dropped in the same place. I never made the connection before.

7. And where the hell is this planet, anyway? It's close enough to Vulcan that Spock can clearly see it collapsing, but that'd make it closer to Vulcan than the Moon is to Earth. Is my geek showing? Vulcan has no moon but it does have sister planet T'Khut that shares a co-orbit with Vulcan. It doesn't have any atmosphere though. I just went with artistic license and it worked for me. Tucks my geek back in and wanders away.

Thread starter finally checking in.
Saw the movie twice. Loved it. Thought the the different cast members did solid to excellent jobs in their portrayals of both the iconic characters (original recipe gang) and newbies bad guy Nero and his #1 henchman.
New!Spock stole the show for me. ZQ nailed what I thought was the trickiest and most compelling role of all, and the scene between him and LN was truly one of the highlights of the whole movie.
Loved the Spock/Uhura romance reveal. Great chemistry between ZQ and ZS and it doesn't hurt that on the shallow side, I thought Spock and Uhura looked reeeal purty together.
I'd definitely like to see their love story unfold as a subplot that plays into the main storyline in a logical (heh) manner. Do. not. want. to see some cliched, contrivance of a triangle involving Kirk.
The only character I didn't care for and hope they'll lose in the sequel was Scotty's little alien buddy. He/it Added nothing to the movie, IMO, and seemed to have been arbitrarily thrown in just for "funny weird alien sidekick" representation or something.
The problem for me was, it's personality wasn't anything interesting (bickery, and stubborn with Scotty, but still whimpering with wuv when they had to be separated). And the design of the thing was crappy (its head just looked like an ugly brooch).
Moving on, I liked the main theme music alot and thought the rest of the backround stuff did the job pretty well. Like many, I also liked the trailer music which I'm hoping will be included on the dvd.
JJ and Co. have come out like gangbusters with this reboot of the franchise and they've set the stage for a great sequel. Hope it lives up to expectations.

Forgot to post this: Jimmy Fallon interviews the two Spocks. LN and ZQ are ridiculously cute separately and together. And seriously, someone needs to write a script that lets these two play father and son. I was struck (again) by how much of a familial resemblance they have to each other. Especially in the shots when they are grinning and/or turned toward Jimmy in profile at the same time.

I wish that the writers had gone through the original series or at least have someone research the show on the Memory Alpha website. Delta Vega was a planet near the edge of the galaxy that the Enterprise went to to fix the engines after encountering the energy field at the edge of the galaxy in the second pilot. Naming a planet near Vulcan the same thing just smacks of people who did not do their research. Is the next movie going to be like spiderman 3 where villains are forced on the franchise by paramount because that is what they wanted and ultimately the movie is not as good?

Actually the writers admitted to using Memory Alpha quite a bit. I also believe the writers are big fans of TOS. JJ Abrams admittedly isn't a big fan but he didn't write the movie at the end of the day. Honestly, I'm sure there are plenty of people that are fans of TOS that wouldn't remember details like that. It's also possible the writers are aware of the fact Delta Vega was not located there in TOS and decided to move it anyway for whatever reason.
This movie takes place in an alternate timeline so really I don't think it should try to be slaves to canon for that very reason. Not to mention the various series of Star Trek were some of the biggest violators in canon. Just compare what the Klingons look like in TOS to what they looked like in TNG. Sure they eventually came up with an explanation for years viewers were expected to ignore it.
As for what the next movie will be like I don't think anyone can say. The writers apparently are still trying to come up with a storyline for the next movie. There has been plenty blogged about what the next movie should have but it will probably be awhile before any details are released.

To be honest, I don't mind if they aren't slaves to canon, but things like what I mentioned above just stinks of poor preparation in my opinion. BTW it wasn't the later series that changed the way Klingon's looked, it was Star trek The motion Picture. In the opening scenes where the vger attacks the klingons, they show the new style klingons on the bridge of a klingon ship.

I think Gene Roddenberry wanted the Klingons to have a more alien appearance on TOS but for some reason (I'm guessing budget) it didn't happen. When they made the first Star Trek film he was able to finally make them look how he'd originally intended. I can accept that and I don't mind that the Klingon's in TOS were more human looking, most of the aliens the crew encountered were humanoid anyway and the one's that weren't looked a bit rubbish eg the Gorn etc but in the 60's I suppose special effects for decent looking aliens were limited so it's understandable.
