Thank you to everyone who answered my questions. Things are a bit clearer now.
Though I may justify paying to see it again in the cinema on the basis that there are things that need clarifying.

I saw it for the third time today. I have never seen any movie three times in the theatre.

I loved this. I thought it was great re-interpretation. I thought the alternate timeline was a wonderful plot device, a way to have new adventures with the existing characters that didn't have to adhere to the canon that had come before. The franchise at this point is like James Bond -- reinterpreted everytime the decade or main character changes.
That sad, I was saddened at Vulcan's destruction. And Spock and Kirk seemed too buddy buddy for me by the end of the movie. In TOS, you never knew if they secretly liked each other, or secretly annoyed the shit out of each other. Here the attraction was made plain. But I can live with that. :-D
I also like Bones' backstory. Fits completely with the character I knew from TOS.

I can't believe I hadn't seen this movie until today! It was awesome! I'm no Trekie, but the movie was great. JJ did a wonderful job.

I'm still happy to hear people say they enjoyed this.
The blooper reel was out earlier this week, but now it looks like Paramount yanked it. It was cute.

Awesome! I know JJ likes to recycle his actors, and I wondered why there weren't more people from Alias making cameos. I figured Jennifer Garner might be too recognizable, but wondered about the others. Man, I really hope Spy Daddy can come back as a Klingon.

The gag reel was hilarious! Those awful Irish accents! I thought Eric Bana was the funniest, actually. I know JJ likes to recycle his actors, and I wondered why there weren't more people from Alias making cameos. I figured Jennifer Garner might be too recognizable, but wondered about the others. Man, I really hope Spy Daddy can come back as a Klingon. I really like Greg Grunberg, but I didn't even recognize him as the voice yelling at child Kirk on the phone early in the movie.

Ok, I loved this movie and can't wait for the DVD to be in my house. But one plot point has been bugging me ever since I watched the movie: the bug they put in Pike when he was on Nero's ship. Was it or was it not the same kind of bugs that were used to mind-control persons in Starfleet in a TNG episode? They totally looked like them... If Pike is back in the sequel and is eating worms, I'll know I was right.

This DVD is going to be massive, I have bought a new flat screen to celebrate this occasion.
