I'm a pretty long-time Trekkie (still remember seeing The Undiscovered Country in theaters when I was a little one) and I half loved this and half didn't. The stuff I liked: Some of the Easter eggs. My favorite one was the quick reference to << the shadowy Starfleet group Section 31>>, which was introduced on Deep Space Nine. I was so pleased to see that series getting a shout-out. And although I thought the 2009 movie was better at this, I like how this rebooted universe gives everyone their due as actual competent officers. Not only Uhura, who was fucking awesome, but Sulu and McCoy and Chekov got some nice moments. When you go back and watch TOS it's clear how little everyone not named Kirk or Spock (and occasionally Scotty) had to do. This is one area where I think the rebooted universe vastly improves on the original. The stuff I didn't like: the first act of the movie was really slow and unengaging, saved only by Spock sassing everyone in sight. Kirk started off the movie as a borderline caricature - I'll give Pine the benefit of the doubt and blame the writing, but something just didn't gel for me. The "conflict" between him and Spock felt really forced. And finally, when they repurposed the << iconic "KHAAAAAAAAAAAN!" shout by giving it to Spock>>... I'm sorry, I know it was supposed to be a super serious shit-just-got-real moment, but I burst out laughing. To sum up: Not as good as the 2009 one for me, but nowhere near "Star Trek movie curse" bad. Once the plot finally kicked into gear, I really enjoyed it. I remember seeing The Undiscovered Country at the theater too. I might have cried a little when everyone signed their names at the end./lifelong Trekkie I remember my dad renting Wrath of Khan and the ear part just freaking me the f out. Like that was one of those, "Dad, are you sure that you are supposed to be letting me watch this?" moments.

I remember my dad rented The Undiscovered Country when it came out on VHS, and I watched it with him. Other than that of the original cast movies I've just seen bits and pieces of 1, 2, and 4 on TV. The only part of 4 I remember is when Spock gave the Vulcan neck pinch to some dude who was being obnoxious on a bus. My brother had to explain to me what he did.

Sorry, I really think the new star trek is just a fanboy's wet dream come true (OO OO spock has a girlfriend!). There isn't much thought put into the things that go on screen except for the fact - does it look cool? I don't think much of JJ abrams, But I've been saying that since Alias season 1 and a half. There isn't any thought or reason to much of what he does on screen. The thing that makes me angry is that people don't seem to mind that these plots are mind numbingly stupid. Star trek used to stand for inteligence. Now, blank pages have more inteligence.

It's all a matter of opinion, I guess. I consider myself fairly intelligent and certainly didn't think the plots were dumb or stupid. It's probably not fair to pass judgment on an entire audience. We all have our own opinions...

I really liked the first movie. I thought they did a decent job keeping it Star Trek while still making a 21st century action movie with its requisite sex, violence, and snappy remarks.
But this movie was stupid. The dialogue was unforgivably stupid. The plot was stupid. The random naked lady was stupid. The racial stuff with casting Khan was stupid. And it bent itself in stupid knots to be the violent non-Star Trek movie it wanted to be.
Which isn't to say it wasn't fun - I did enjoy it. I just thought it was epically stupid. But it wasn't very Star Trek (a franchise which also has a reputation for being epically stupid - but in a very different way).

It just wasn't faithful to Star Trek, which is the biggest criticism. Whether it deserves an audience at all is a different subject, and one best left off this thread.

At the risk of missing the forest for the trees, isn't a compelling mass of the appeal of the Star Trek universe things that "look cool"? The topic of Cumberbatch as Khan is discussed at Racebending; I think the discussion in the comments is more interesting than the article.

I'm right with you. They took me to the theatre to see that when I was like, 5-6? I was forever traumatized by the ear thing. Mr. carrier76 and I watched it on BluRay a few years ago and I still hid my eyes during those parts. Between that and The Dark Crystal, 1982 was a scary movie time for me! We went to see this tonight and I thought it was great. I was completely engaged the whole time (well, except for when the assholes sitting behind me were loudly whispering and crinkling and laughing) and thought everyone kicked ass. I still don't get everyone's sexy-fun-times interests in Cumberbatch (blech) but he does have a great Alan Rickman-esque quality to his voice and I liked him a lot in this role. While Mr. carrier76 was annoyed by {Spoiler}the callbacks to Wrath of Khan , I really enjoyed it, and loved the fact that {Spoiler}we got to see Spock get angry and seek vengeance. The KHAAAAAAAN! yell was a little hokey, but I still loved it.

I loved it. And I'm a super old-school TOS Trekkie. I like the fact that Kirk and Spock are different than what we expect, that was the whole point of the first reboot.
The one thing I could have done without was the formal uniform that look like a cross between a 1960's New York policeman and some rejected costume from StarShip Troopers.
I like my Federation looking a little less Nazi.

Well, I haven't seen the new film, but having seen the first one, I can poke big holes in the premise. How in the world do regular, bottom of the food chain romulans know about time travel? One would think that, given the fact that the romulan empire seems to be a military dictator ship, this information would be restricted. ships would be constructed so that such things are not possible. Also, The romulan empire is big, not just one lone isolated planet. How in the world did a vulcan starship cross the neutral zone without being shot down by a dozen romulan warbirds? I could keep going on, but you get the point. I felt that I was watching a fan fiction script come to life.
As an adventure film it was fine. It definitely lifted the star trek movie curse. I'm willing to admit, that in the past the only good one was Wrath of Khan, in my opinion. But how can anyone watch the opening of the first movie and NOT ask those questions?
Too many of the actors make caricatures of the original actors performances. McCoy was from Georgia, Where in the world was Karl Urban's McCoy from?
Gary Mitchel in TOS described Kirk as a stack of books with legs. Chris pine acts like a frat boy.
Loved Zoe Saldana, she didn't try to be like Nichelle Nichols.
Didn't really feel Scotty from Simon Pegg, he made it his own character.
Zachary Quinto is really the standout character in this series of films. I personally hope he doesn't have Nimoy's problems getting other work.
But you know, the script - lots and lots of big holes.
IMHO YMMV
