I still do not know why she had a British accent and her father did not. Same reason my dad has a Swedish accent and I do not: we grew up in different places.

I enjoyed it overall, but also found it disappointing. And the writing to be kind of clumsy all over the place (which I guess IS a trekky characteristic but meh) and a lot of the dialogue (which was so great in the first movie) to be just outright bad. The Trek stuff seemed pasted on to a non-star trek movie about British villain dude.
I am not super familiar with the original series (Khan, anyone else, are completely new to me), so I have no idea if familiarity with those made it less plotholey. But the writing, especially the interpersonal stuff, seemed hammy and unsubtle as hell.

Seeing this again on Saturday. I'm tempted to buy the novelization too. People have been posting snippets on Tumblr and I like it.

Binky, I loved the film but I think I could partially agree with you. I'm a fan but not a certified Trekkie, or at least it wouldn't occur to me to identify as such. There were a lot of Easter eggs, jokes and writing for people more familiar with the series, and I assume I'm biased. Anyway, I have the same feeling of "ugh, plotholes! Sucky dialogue! I've seen plays better than this!" when I go to superhero movies.

I saw this tonight and enjoyed it overall. I think 2009's Star Trek was better but this is still an enjoyable film. Benedict Cumberbatch was excellent (problematic elements of his casting aside), Simon Pegg shined, Karl Urban is Bones, and Zachary Quinto remains awesome. And yes if there is another film may Marcus and Bones be a couple. I get in the original timeline Marcus and Kirk were a one time couple but there was more chemistry between Karl Urban and Alice Eve.

I absolutely loved this. I saw it in a great theater with reclining seats and in 3D, so it was a totally different experience. Other than Bones' being kinda cartoonish, I really enjoyed the story line and thought BC was great as a villain. I'd say I liked it as much as the first, just in a different way. > {Spoiler}I was shell-shocked with fear when they told Chekov to put on a red shirt, though. <

> {Spoiler}I was shell-shocked with fear when they told Chekov to put on a red shirt, though. < Me too! This is where I diverged on the opinions of my friends--I thought the above mentioned spoiler is what separated this film from being a regular, semi-forgettable summer film. ETA: Mutagen, I also agree with you re: the {Spoiler}Khaaaaaan! moment . I had the same reaction, and I was working under the assumption it was kind of supposed to be like that. Thanks for pointing out the DS9 connection--I never watched that series at all and was unaware of that connection. It kind of went over my head in this installment.

I'm a pretty long-time Trekkie (still remember seeing The Undiscovered Country in theaters when I was a little one) and I half loved this and half didn't.
The stuff I liked: Some of the Easter eggs. My favorite one was the quick reference to <<the shadowy Starfleet group Section 31>>, which was introduced on Deep Space Nine. I was so pleased to see that series getting a shout-out. And although I thought the 2009 movie was better at this, I like how this rebooted universe gives everyone their due as actual competent officers. Not only Uhura, who was fucking awesome, but Sulu and McCoy and Chekov got some nice moments. When you go back and watch TOS it's clear how little everyone not named Kirk or Spock (and occasionally Scotty) had to do. This is one area where I think the rebooted universe vastly improves on the original.
The stuff I didn't like: the first act of the movie was really slow and unengaging, saved only by Spock sassing everyone in sight. Kirk started off the movie as a borderline caricature - I'll give Pine the benefit of the doubt and blame the writing, but something just didn't gel for me. The "conflict" between him and Spock felt really forced. And finally, when they repurposed the <<iconic "KHAAAAAAAAAAAN!" shout by giving it to Spock>>... I'm sorry, I know it was supposed to be a super serious shit-just-got-real moment, but I burst out laughing.
To sum up: Not as good as the 2009 one for me, but nowhere near "Star Trek movie curse" bad. Once the plot finally kicked into gear, I really enjoyed it.

I've been having some serious naughty thoughts about Captain Fine, which is a given, but damn if they weren't all working for me. Especially Bones. I just really liked the scope of the movie. Spoiler: Did anyone catch Chris Hemsworth & Jennifer Morrison's voices at the end when Kirk wakes from his coma? Witchie, yes! Great callback!

Mutagen, we laughed at that line too. My daughter never saw any of the older movies so not sure why she laughed.
They could've edited out some of the running through the Enterprise I got tired of wondering where all the extras where ending up as the ship twisted and turned.
Cumberbatch's voice would be a wonderous start of foreplay, I wonder if he's read any books on tape?
