I totally didn't realize that Carol Marcus was the mother of Kirk's child. Oops. Not in this timeline, which I'm fine with. I liked her with Bones. When they kept mentioning Admiral Marcus and then brought on "Carol", it tipped me off-I was trying to figure out why they changed her name. I still do not know why she had a British accent and her father did not. I also hope that they don't pair her with Kirk, I liked her better with Bones. But that might be because I never liked Kirk's son and his stupid perm.

This was fantastic! I was so worried that I was going to be disappointed, that it wasn't going to be as good as the first one, but it was totally engrossing. The perfect balance of thoughtfulness, corn, shout-outs, and action. And HOT. {Spoiler}Spock punching the shit out of Khan will be my happy place for a long while. I do wish Uhura had been given more to do, but overall everything was just...yesss. ETA: And yes, please haunt my dreams, Zachary Quinto! I think I'll see this again on Thursday.

I am going back this weekend and taking the boy. I went back and forth on whether to introduce him to the original cast first, but honestly I think that he will like this better.

I've been having some serious naughty thoughts about Captain Fine, which is a given, but damn if they weren't all working for me. Especially Bones. I just really liked the scope of the movie. Spoiler: Did anyone catch Chris Hemsworth & Jennifer Morrison's voices at the end when Kirk wakes from his coma?

Borokat, if you want to give The Boy a taste of the original flavor, the original tv series is streaming on Netflix, and Khan and the Eugenics War is introduced in Season 1: The Space Seed. And yes, Bones is also on my list. Downer alert: {Spoiler}After mulling it over, I'm having slightly uncomfortable thoughts about the humanoids at the beginning. People who are not quite human who don't have the wheel and who seem to engage in cargo-cult type behavior are an incredibly convenient trope. I didn't catch it at the time, but the name of their plan, Nibiru, is also the name of a pseudo-science planet (not a pseudo planet). It just left a bad taste in my mouth, although I'm not done thinking about it and my feelings might change. I know their prime directive was fairly neutral, but the way it was portrayed in the film is giving me Deep Thoughts. That aside, I'm going to see it again on Thursday. Yay!

While I do understand the criticisms of female characters' roles, Spoiler: at least Uhura gets to use a phaser on Khan, thus helping Spock take the guy down and rescuing Captain Kirk to boot. Bones himself points out that he and Uhura had as much to do with Kirk's recovery as Spock. I would like to see Uhura and Carol Marcus given meatier roles in the next Trek film. C'mon Hollywood, people aren't afraid of watching women kick ass and take names!

I saw it tonight and I absolutely loved it! What stood out to me what Quinto's Spock. He was good in the first one, of course, but I feel that he has now fully inhabited the character and made it his own. In terms of supporting crew members, Scotty was to this movie what Bones was to the first. It really does feel like traveling back in time and seeing much beloved characters in their youth. And Cumberbatch was perfectly cast - I can't imagine anyone else playing that part.

Do you think that it would confuse him-a totally different cast playing the same characters? He's almost-nine. And very literal.

Keeping in mind that I have no idea about kids, I don't think it will. I mean, Star Trek requires a lot of suspension of disbelief through its mere existence; he might even get a charge out of knowing more before he goes into the movie, but that's a personality thing and only you can answer that. Is he aware of the multiplicity of Batmans? Oh! And tiny spoiler: Nimoy makes a small appearance, like in the last one, so being able to see Nimoy as Spock and Quinto as Spock could be less confusing if he sees the original tv episode. Also, specific to Khan and the Eugenics War, they explain it in more detail in the tv episode, so that might save you some questions during the movie. ETA: Actually, it might be better to have him watch "Space Seed" after he sees it if literal-thinking is his game.
