Sarah Paulson apologized for using a fat suit and prosthetics to play Linda Tripp in American Crime Story and said she should not have accepted the part. I disagree with her - she was great in the role, and I'd much rather watch her than some hypothetical anonymous chubby actress. She added a little bit of middle-aged chubb, changed her hair and wore glasses - that seems to me to be well within the bounds of appropriateness for an actor. Representation does not need to be taken as far as many people want it to be taken. I also like Renee Zellweger and would probably rather watch her than someone else in a lot of things, but it has gotten weird that she keeps playing significantly overweight characters, especially when she herself is so incredibly thin. It's always distracting when a glamorous actress has been blatantly un-glamorized in a really drastic way. I must apologise in advance if this sounds unkind in any way, but I looked at some of her photos, and I wonder if she is frequently selected to play these characters because despite being thin her face is on the rounder and fuller side. Is that a possibility I wonder?

Her face looks fuller and different. It's good work, but still looks a bit different.
I wish just once a celebrity was honest about the stuff they've have done (okay, Paulina Porizkorva documents her "work" on Insta, but she doesn't get much done.)
I think casting her is BS. There are a thousand great actresses who could do wonderful work and could use the job, but I think casting Renee in a fat suit designed to draw in viewers. And from what I've read, she can barely emote around the prosthetics on her face, so it seems poorly executed.

Courteney Cox recently said that it was the public reaction (i.e., criticism) of her cosmetic procedures that made her realize that she had gone overboard without realizing it and "looked really strange". That's why she stopped with all of the fillers/injections (and she looks SO much better now.)
Commenting on an actress's appearance or alleged cosmetic procedures is always sticky territory, but I think Renee may also have taken something beneficial away from the harsh public feedback from the 2000's and realized that she had gone overboard and it wasn't good. Ditto Nicole Kidman.

She was always pretty, so I'm glad she cut back on the unnecessary plastic surgery.

Frankly, I think Tom and Lorenzo can stuff it. Renee is great in the part, fat suit and all. And it's worth pointing out that it was a part that wouldn't have existed were it not for Renee - the whole project was her idea inspired by a Dateline podcast. Like most actresses her age - finding good roles often takes creating them for themselves.
Actors always look for challenging, interesting roles that are as far removed from themselves as possible. (Well the talented ones do) I just can't get all worked up over her wearing a fat suit to play a part in a project that was her baby from the get-go.

I tried watching Shining Vale- that's Courteney Cox's newest show. I gotta say, I can't watch it- and it is primarily because I can NOT get over her unnatural face. She still looks way too Jokeresque to me, and it takes me right out of any scene.
Topic: well I know commenting on things like this can be sticky- I also think actors and actresses whose primary role is based (at least in part- often in large part) on their looks- well, why can't we comment? I think the line for me is: mocking/being cruel about something that cannot be helped, and maybe that's about it. As others have kinda pointed out already: not discussing it also creates this weird veil around women and aging and looks. Everyone knows- it's obvious that major surgery/procedures have been done- and they look bad. Part of why women might feel compelled to go this extreme is because there is a veil of silence around it. If more people were just like: oh honey no, that looks terrible, maybe it would be less common?

Agreed--and having just watched the first episode, Renee is really, really great in it. The fat suit isn't distracting to me at all and it's not hampering her performance at all.

They want her to gain 50 pounds than lose 50 pounds so they can point and write articles about how she did it and why she did it, completely overlooking her acting ability and how the part moved the audience. They still talk about the Machinist/Christian Bale, and Bridget Jones/Renee. Have you read anything that doesn’t mention the weight gain and lose, or loss and gain?

I was going to say, I'd rather a fat suit than those skin-crawling stories of gaining and losing unhealthy amounts of weight.

And, if I may be shallow for a minute, Matthew McConaughey never looked the same (read good-looking) to me after he lost and regained weight for and after The Dallas Buyers Club.
