Dear Hollywood,
Why does EVERYTHING have to be about sex? I gave Girls a try, but apparently there is nothing in their lives that isn't about sex. I've been watching The Big C since it started, but now not only do we need to see the teenager having anal sex, we need to HEAR the brother doing phone sex. I don't find any of it entertaining or funny, or whatever it's supposed to be.
It's an easy, lazy, titillating out instead of real wit, humor, and good writing and I'm sick of it. It's on EVERY show ... all the time.
Sincerely,
The Big Fat Prude (who still spends a ton of money on cable and movies. think about my demographic for once)

Not only did GCB & Awake get cancelled, but crap like Gossip Girl was renewed. Unbelievable.

Okay, so Two and Half Men is renewed – doesn’t that fly in the theory that scripted shows are too expensive? Aren’t the salaries on 2 1/2 Men very, very high? Surely the ratings aren’t that great anymore that it’s worth spending that much money on a half hour show.
And are reality shows really that inexpensive? The salaries on American Idol are huge, plus they have to fly in and house all those contestants. Same with the dancing shows, and don’t they film the bachelor-type shows in exotic locations? Surely Survivor and Amazing Race are expensive, with all the travel and permits and whatnot.
I can see that stuff like Hoarders and all the home buying/decorating shows are inexpensive, but that’s not network TV.
Harry’s Law would have made a great lead-in on Tuesdays at 9 to Parenthood, I’m guessing. Same type of viewer? I’m still nervous to see if they’re renewing Parenthood

Yeah, I don't get the 2 1/2 Men renewal either. They certainly have enough episodes for syndication. It bolsters my theory that Ashton Kutcher has nuclear grade blackmail photos of somebody - what else would explain his successful career?

I think the ratings are still very high for that show.
Though the salaries for the judges on shows like AI are pretty high, a lot of other stuff on reality shows is given away for free or discount if it's mentioned on the air. A resort might let a reality show film there for discount if the place gets mentioned on the air, which presumably will drum up more business, the same probably goes for airlines; also on Amazing Race I don't know how much the contestants actually have to pay themselves.
I do remember reading that on the last episode on the first season of Survivor, CBS charged advertisers about 1 million for a one minute ad. Not too shabby.
Also the people on shows like Jersey Shore and Real Housewives shows make about maybe 10k per episode, which is a lot less than what they would have to pay a star.

I'm glad Parenthood was renewed. And glad that CSI:Miami is done, although I'm surprised. I thought that it got high ratings (for some reason).
Survivor used to have huge ratings - to justify charging $1M for a commercial - but not anymore. It's still a popular show, but not the ratings machine it once was. Yet, its costs would remain the same or higher. Travel costs have risen since 9-11 and I imagine salaries for Probst & Co. have gone up.
I surely hope contestants on The Amazing Race don't have to pay any of the travel costs themselves!

I was just about to post a vitriolic screed about CSI: Miami in the "How The Hell Is This Show Still On" thread, but CBS took care of that one for me.
Back on Topic:
Dear Hollywood: Please give Jeremy Northram a good role soon, kthnxbye.
