I have no idea myself. Years ago I remember watching Leif Garrett in one of those Behind the Music shows. His mum spoke about how she has various encounters with Brooke Shields and her mum. Apparently Brooke's mum was very present and not as permissive as the other stage parents, and she was criticized for this. Initially Leif's mum thought she was overprotective and awful. She then said, "I take my hat of to her. No one messed with her kid." Hmm. That's interesting--IIRC Brooke Shields' mom got a lot of criticism for being a pushy stage mom and letting Brooke take on jobs that were too sexual for her age, like "Pretty Baby," the Calvin Klein ads, and "The Blue Lagoon." I remember watching the "Pretty Baby" on DVD with a friend once and we were both horrified at what she was permitted to do as a child actress. Brooke's mother was also an alcoholic. On the other hand, her mother did one thing right: she made certain Brooke stayed in school.

Yeah, Brooke has talked a lot about the difficult relationship she had with her mother as a result of her alcoholism. Given the childhood she had with her mom's stage-mom-ness and addiction, she does seem to have grown up extremely well-adjusted.

The judge in the lawsuit also raked Teri Shields over the coals. He told her, "You chose your daughter's roles. You chose 'Endless Love,' not 'Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.'"

Jesus! She was TEN!?! That's so vile. The photographs are child pornography, why weren't they ordered destroyed?

Jesus! She was TEN!?! That's so vile. The photographs are child pornography, why weren't they ordered destroyed? Because it was the 70s, I guess, and the judge decided they weren't supposed to be sexy. The photographer's career was ruined, though, in the end. Which I'm not too sad about. Also, Teri was right there in the room when the pictures were taken, so it's not like she could claim she didn't know what he was doing.

Because it was the 70s, I guess IMHO the 1970s were completely screwed up about sexualizing young girls. Side note: when I was in middle school in the late 1980s, our science teacher let us have some old student science mags that had been lying around in a closet since the 1970s. It was a Scholastic Press-type publication with ads in it. (FYI, I don't actually remember the publisher and don't want to give the impression that it was indeed SP.) Even though they were old, the magazines were given to us since the science was still valid, especially at the level explained to us. One of the ads was this one. We were all like, "What the f#@&#^*&@?!?!?!" We were kids only a few years older than the model in the ad and knew its message was messed up.
