I never watched Cribs much but I remember Moby pointed out his bookcase and saying that he rarely saw books in any other celebrity homes. Very true. On top of being bland and very generically extravagent, most of the people on Cribs don't seem to read a lot. They have the mandatory expensive entertainment set up, luxury cars and not even one rack of books. Not even those leather-bound classics that people get to make themselves look smart.
And it always cracks me up when you see young stars with these massive houses and expensive clothes. I always hope that they've saved some money since most are going to be one-hit or one-movie wonders.

I agree that a lot of celebrity homes are gorgeous on the outside, but inside are bland as hell and all look exactly the same. What a waste of such nice houses. Another thing I don't understand about celebrity homes is that a lot of them are all squashed together. Huge houses, yeah, but you could practically stick your hand out the 12-foot picture window and touch the stucco of the house next door. If I had that kind of money, I'd buy land and have some privacy.
I too roll my eyes when I see homes of silly 19-year-old pop stars/actors on low-rated WB shows/etc. who have had minimal success and are already showing off their huge closets full of trendy designer clothes and their fancy cars. Most likely, the bank will be taking those things soon enough.

I loved Seann William Scott's spot on Cribs. At the time he still lived in an apartment with his best friend. It looked like a place that a normal guy his age would be living in, complete with cinderblock shelves and small dirty kitchen.

Jerry O'Connell's place was like a slightly nicer version of that, except it was modest house (I think) with his brother and some other guy. It looked like a regular bachelor guy's house.
I loved Rob Zombie's entire place, which was big but not superhuge and full of personal touches including an amazing Creature from the Black Lagoon statue and a pirate bar. As far as ritzier digs go, I liked Missy Elliot's aquarium/Lambergini chairs. If you're gonna go broke, might as well do it with panache!

In Style featured Madonna's LA home and it was quite lovely. It actually looked like a home a family lives in. And she owns a couple of Frida Kahlo paintings, sigh.. The English mansion featured in Vogue however did nothing for me.

Wow, firstaid, I never thought I'd have a reason to respect ol' Jack, but I do now. Just because of his art.
I once stayed in an apartment in NYC that was later sold to Frank & Kathy Lee Gifford. A few years ealier, Woody Allen wanted to use if for the interiors for one of his films. It was an elegant, pre-war building in the east 50's: huge windows, incredibly high ceilings, those separate showers where you can A) sit down and B) have a zillion different showerheads turned on you at the same time. I wish I had taken photos!

Word on all the McMansion opinions. I heard a snippet of David Lee Roth's radio interview with Henry Rollins who is pretty cool by the way. Dave brought up the point and Rollins confirmed something about some so called "musician's" houses. In one case they talked about Jessica and Ashlee Simpson. They both said that in every true musician's house that they had ever been to there was music (cds, piano, boomboxes/players for every occaision) everywhere. Music always playing, and that they were always looking for new stuff to listen to or recommending to their friends. Then they both remarked how little if any of that they saw in Jessica's abode and it hit home for me. These people for the most part really are celebrities and not singers/actors. They live their lives, decorate their homes as a way to gain some sort of stepladder to some more fame. "Let's invite MTV into our ginormous house so they can see the painted ceilings." ( I am talking to you Russell and Kimora). Of course Dave and Henry didn't mention the requisite drugs in musicians homes either, so they may not have hit every point. Rob Zombie's house was indeed unique, but it managed to creep me out in a small way. I hear that the guy is about 5' 7" in real life though and maybe the hat and sunglasses are to scare away his legions of fans.

Moby's place is nice. Not my style, really, but nice nonetheless. I saw his house on Cribs and was pretty impressed. It was nice to see something that wasn't so tackily over the top and ugly.
