Yessss...the episode about the weight loss surgery was especially gruesome, too.

Wow! I didn't know that about Burt Lancaster. I would have assumed he was Republican. I read that whole post about him thinking it was about Charlton Heston because my brain malfunctioned for a bit. I was so so confused and wondered what had turned him into such a latter-day freak. Then reality reasserted itself and I was so glad because I have kind of loved Burt Lancaster since “Local Hero.” A year and a half late, but I love Lancaster, and I LOVE Local Hero.

I'm listening to "Make Me Over" the spin off podcast of "You Must Remember This" about Hollywood beauty. The episode about Merle Oberon, omg, it's so sad. She was Indian and Anglo, incredibly beautiful, but bleached her skin with products containing mercury, which are still on the market in weaker compounds. And when she tried to have a baby with her 2nd husband, found out her Fallopian tubes had been removed without her knowledge during an operation for cancer. I know this forced sterilization happened to many women but it's still so shocking and sad to hear about this. Imagine wanting a baby and someone took that away from you without your knowledge and/or consent. Jesus. I just listened to this episode yesterday and, man, I just had no idea! This woman basically lived out a lie her entire life to have a career.

This woman basically lived out a lie her entire life to have a career. I know, right?! The PR trip to her "birthplace" of Tasmania was what got me. Imagine going that far with a lie. I remember watching that miniseries about her with Mia Sara in the 80s. Robert Wolders, her last husband, went on to have a relationship with Audrey Hepburn after Oberon died.

It's a very pulpy Judith Krantz version of her life story, but it's a fun read with some fact mixed in with fiction. She also had a terrible car accident that left her with a lot of facial scars. She was insanely beautiful.

Merle Oberon had a very sad life in a lot of ways. I think her last marriage was a happy one, but she lived through so much trauma.
