Necromancing this thread. Just read about how Errol Flynn and W.C. Fields stole John Barrymore's corpse to take it out drinking. I thought my friend was messing with me when he told me that.

Necromancing this thread. Just read about how Errol Flynn and W.C. Fields stole John Barrymore's corpse to take it out drinking. I thought my friend was messing with me when he told me that. There are several versions floating around Old Hollywood of Errol Flynn drinking with John Barrymore's corpse. My favorite comes from Paul Henreid's autobiography Ladies' Man. John Barrymore's alcoholism cost him his home and career, and so Errol Flynn took him in for the last few years of his life. Barrymore died in May 1942. Casablanca was being filmed at the time, and Peter Lorre, an incorrigible prankster who had a lot of time on his hands once his character Ugarte was killed off, corralled Henreid and a few other friends into bribing the mortuary into letting them borrow Barrymore's corpse for the evening. It took a couple hundred bucks from each of them. So the friends carried Barrymore into Errol Flynn's house, set him up in his favorite chair, then hit the lights, hid and waited. Flynn came home, turned on the lights, and nodded to Barrymore as he walked past. He got a few steps, froze and whirled around. He felt for Barrymore's pulse and then shouted, "All right you bastards, come out now!" The friends emerged from hiding, and they all drank a toast to Barrymore's memory before taking him back to the mortuary. The story always reminds me of Blake Edwards' movie S.O.B. where William Holden, Robert Webber, and Robert Preston's characters steal the corpse of their friend (played by Richard Mulligan) and take him for a night of drinking before giving him a Viking burial at sea, and perhaps that's what inspired Edwards.

I'd also never heard of the Gloria Grahame scandal. Apparently she was caught in bed with her 13-year-old stepson whom she later married.

I see that Annette Bening is playing her in the movie, but I definitely got some Scarlett Johansson vibes from that picture. But I’m imagining the bulk of it’s going to be her in the later part of her life so Annette more sense. ETA She played Violet in It’s a Wonderful Life!

Wow, how very Mary Katherine Letourneau of her. Besides the fact that she raped a child, from the linked article- The union made Tony the stepfather to his half brother Timothy, the child Ray had fathered with Grahame.

I feel sorry for all the kids involved, including the one she later married.
