Vanity Fair (the Magazine)

I hate the music issue most but the Hollywood issue is in second place.

I love Dominic Dunne and they have a lot of good people writing for them, Hitch etc. (I know not everyone loves him, tho'!)

The Hollywood issue (the one with Cate, Kate and Uma -- all gorgeous!) had a really great article on the Kabbalah Centre. It was mostly cynical, asking why a place where a give-give-give-share-share philosophy is so underminded by their blatant materialism. My parents go there, so it was especially interesting to me. And - good god - my sister-in-law is quoted in it and she sounds like such a dope.

Whoever wrote it did a good job.

According to the site, the next cover is "Supermodels! On the beach!". Well, I suppose if actual fashion magazines won't put models on the cover any more, someone has to...

Yeah I applaud them if it really is supermodels on the beach. I am sick, sick sick of the 'fashion' mags putting celebs - mostly B-Listers - on their covers. Allure and Vogue and Elle are especially guilty, or maybe I just see that because I read them...

This is my tried and true guilty pleasure. (except for the Ronald Reagan issue. That blew chunks and sold so poorly)
Working in magazines I can tell you this is usually within the top three selling magazines in the country.

I eat it all up like mashed potatoes.

Dominick Dunne's diary makes me giggle because he is so out of touch with reality it pulls a person in.

"I was having lunch with Elizabeth Taylor and Jesus Christ and we were remembering how much fun the picnics that Roddy mcDowell use to host. Everyone use to go. My good friend Samual Goldwyn, Danny Kaye, Ghandi, and of course Dennis Hopper. What a gay old time. Right now I am preparing a battle of fisticuffsmanship with Gary Condit. Okay so that was a slight exaggeration.

I enjoy the occasional guest column from Dame Edna or Brooke Astor (who I think went to school with God's older brother)

I think my favorite are the articles about old Hollywood. Delicious stuff.

I think that Christopher Hitchens needs to get laid or take some Ex-lax because that man is permenantly grumpy.

Just got the latest issue but haven't had time to actually read it yet. I will say the pictures of the models at the beach are stunning. I have the hugest straight-girl crush on Natalia Vodianova - she is almost supernaturally beautiful.

Is that the April issue? I wanted to get it just to read that Kaballah article, and I hope that I didn't miss out on it.

Ironically, last year's Hollywood issue had an article that I wanted to read (about CEMJ).

The April VF has great article on Kimora Lee Simmons, complete with her posing in swimwear. She has got to be one of the most unappealing people in the universe.

Dominic Dunne IS why I buy Vanity Fair.

That made me giggle, Genvieve...and if you hadn't used the Jesus reference, I would have thought it was a direct quote. But it is why I love DD. I got hooked on his articles during the OJ trial, and even read his book about his experiences during the trial for his daughter's murderer. Talk about justice not being served.

But back on topic...I know I would not regularly read VF if he were not a regular.

There are aspects of Vanity Fair that I like. However, I remember someone from FT always criticizing Vanity Fair for blatantly excluding people of color from their cover and much of their content. And damnit, they were totally right and I can't help but noticing it everytime I read it. I think it's a general problem in magazines but particularly glaring in VF, meaning I can't really enjoy it anymore because it seems so narrow in scope.

I did, however, love the old story they did on Furries and Plushies. It's the first time I ever heard of them and thought, damn, sex with stuffed animals. I have seen everything. (generally Plushies struck me as weirder than furries)
