I bought Twilight after reading a recommendation on another thread here and, my god, I was absolutely addicted! After raving to my friend I got her hooked on the books too. However, as much as I love them as guilty pleasure reads I have big issues with the plot. New Moon was a real dive in quality and storytelling after Twilight and I felt Edward and Bella just seemed obnoxious together. Team Jacob for me! Although, that's not really a popular opinion, I want Jacob to be happy so he can be rid of the toxic relationship he has with Bella.
As for the movie, I like Robert Pattison as Edward although I fear for his safety because there are a lot of pissed off, crazy, Edward fans.

I am Team Jacob, too. After the first book, Bella just came off as unhealthily obsessed with/dependent on Edward, and he seemed to treat her like a child (always in need of saving/protecting, and treating her like she's so silly and cute). How is that a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship? It seems creepy and ooky to me. With Jacob, at least she was on equal footing.
People are pissed off that Robert P has been cast as Edward? I think he's perfect -- he's got a ridiculously beautiful face, just gorgeous features, which is exactly how I picture Edward.
Oh, they are total teen crap. And I can't get enough of them. I read Twilight in its entirety on the plane to Italy (for my honeymoon). And I totally made sure the cover was hidden so no one else on the plane could see what I was reading, lest I embarrass myself. But they're such cheesy goodness!
I'm also excited that Elizabeth Reaser is going to be in it. Peter Facinelli looks like an ass with that blond hair, though.

I agree that Robert Pattinson is absolutely perfect for Edward. He fits the picture in my head almost exactly. Who are these crazies who are all up in arms?

I, uh, shamelessly love these books too. I can't wait for Breaking Dawn to come out in August. Though I do think Edward treats Bella a little too much like a toddler that needs to be wrapped in cotton. But the books are still like crack.

I belong to a Twilight group *ahem* and when Rob got cast there was a lot of 'OMG, eeeeew, he looks nothing like Edward' and I was the lone voice of dissent. On livejournal you'll see a lot of Twilight icons/photo manips with Gaspard Ulliel and Emily Browning as Edward and Bella and there was a lot of support for them before the casting was ever made.
I'm pleased that the press release photos have come out now because I think it will help the support for Rob as they see him in character. I agree that he's perfect for Edward; the strong jaw, the pale skin. Poor Kristen Stewart was getting flack too but it's Edward that most people care about.
The books are my crack too but I agree that Edward was kind of patronising towards Bella and sometimes quite snappish. He totally called the shots in the relationship until Bella figured out how to emotionally manipulate him.

I picked up the next two from the library on Saturday and plowed through New Moon yesterday. I was up until midnight finishing it. Going to start on Eclipse here in a few minutes - I really really liked them. ETA: Finished Eclipse (had to force myself to put it down last night, otherwise I would have been up past midnight finishing it. I agree, these are like crack. Crappy teen books, but I really enjoyed them. I don't think I've ever wanted two characters to consummate their relationship more than I want Edward and Bella to. ;D I can't wait for the next one. Are there going to be four or five total?

Hee! I have to admit that the books sometimes frustrate me, but I have to keep reading because they simply have. to. bone. And I know it'll probably be very subtle and only hinted at (like Harry's first kiss in Half-Blood Prince -- show before and after, but not the actual act) because the author is Mormon and all, but I just gotta know that it happened. Erm...that's not exactly healthy, is it?

I don't expect anything graphic as it is a teen novel, but I'm hoping for a little more than that. Although I completely agree with you that for a teen novel I don't think anything graphic will happen... However, every time I read a Bella/Edward scene I find myself yelling, "DAMNIT Edward, Put. It. In. Already!" (I'm a big romance novel fan, so this is torture for me not to read the "happy endings" I'm so used to. I read New Moon entirely yesterday and for some odd reason (and yes hormones are probably involved), I was crying my eyes out when Bella cliff dives and can hear Edward's voice yelling at her to stop. And also when she was in the meadow.. gah that was difficult to read . I could see Meyer's colorful writing tone down in the second book, which made it a little more believable that these kids were... well, kids (sorta). Sometime today I will get to the third.. I really wish I could hold off and read the third book only when the fourth is about to come out but I don't think I can go cold turkey that long.

If you thought the Bella/Edward scenes in Twilight were frustrating, the ones in Eclipse are pure torture.
