Is there anything you can do when you feel the shipping and handling charges are too high on an item? I bought a toy for Christmas; I did think at the time that the shipping was too much, but I assumed it would come Priority for that much money. Nope...item was shipped parcel post and took 14 days to arrive after payment. I emailed seller but have gotten no response. I don't think there is anything you can do, especially if the seller clearly stated the shipping cost on the auction page. Buyer beware I guess. I'm torn on the shipping issue, on the one hand some people due charge a lot for shipping on the other hand people don't have to buy it. And the price seen on the label doesn't account for how much packaging cost, etc.

I gave them the benefit of a doubt because of packaging costs, etc. However, the item arrived in a torn box with absolutely no padding inside the box. The box of the toy itself was scratched and dirty.
When I saw how much they charged for shipping, I assumed that the package would NOT be sent Parcel Post-- the slowest, cheapest way to send a package.
The only assumption I could make from the above is that they are pocketing a great deal of the shipping and handling charge; charging a premium and shipping the cheapest possible way with minimal packaging.

I'm kind of surprised that they didn't indicate which method of shipping was being used--it's built into the selling template. Still no response from the seller? It sounds extra super shady, but I don't think there's any recourse on shipping charges other than leaving honest feedback.

I've seen the reasoning for people having high shipping charges being a way for them to recoup their eBay costs of listing and all that. There used to be something in the eBay rules about not inflating shipping charges, but they probably canned that. (And, hell, sometimes Parcel Post isn't even the cheapest route to go.) Depending on the item and their shipping charges, a lot of the time it's not even worth it to eBay anymore. I hates it!

If you receive the wrong item from an ebayer do you have to pay the costs to ship the item back to them? Here's my sitch: I bought a guitar from ebay and the seller said it would be sent 3 day UPS. Well two weeks later I still hadn't received the guitar and I email him. He says he currently doesn't have the item but he will get his hands on it in the next few days. Are ebay sellers allowed to sell items they don't actually have? Anyway, almost a month later he finally sent the guitar except he sent the wrong model and color. He says I can get my money back if I return the guitar. I cannot get the correct guitar because apparently he never had the guitar he posted in the auction. Now I imagine a guitar will be a bit pricey to have shipped. So do I have to just suck up the shipping costs in order to get my refund? It just sucks that I will have no guitar and be out the shipping costs as well.

jayne, you shouldn't have to pay for shipping it back since it was the seller's error. Send them an email explaining this, and requesting either a return shipping label or confirmation (in writing, email will do) that they will refund your shipping costs as well. If they won't do it, you can contact eBay's mediation team and they will negotiate between you.
You were screwed on every promise they made, from timing of delivery to even having what they advertised. You shouldn't have to pay for anything at this point.
BTW, did you check their feedback profile before buying? It's generally a good idea to make sure they have had satisfied customers and no real big black marks in their selling history. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

You can also file a claim with Paypal (if that's how you paid) that you received the wrong item. I would definitely tell eBay that they auctioned off something they didn't posses and don't posses now! You didn't do anything wrong, so you shouldn't be out the $$ to ship it back. How ridiculous.

Yes. But it can't be forced. It sucks, but that is how it goes. Same with most other retailers, I purchased something on Amazon recently from one those booksellers and got the wrong item, had to pay to send it back in exchange for a refund of the original purchase amount plus the original shipping.

This is virtually impossible. eBay charges a fee for listing, and another fee based on how much your item sells. If PayPal is used, there's another fee. And then there's the actual shipping, and JESUS, MARY, JOSEPH AND THE WEE DONKEY, are packing materials ever expensive! One would have to charge almost three times as much for the shipping in order to make any sort of real profit. I had a man yelling at me last month because I charged $55 for shipping heavy Bose speakers - never mind that the cost came out to nearly $80 (parcel post). The S&H fees are what YOU pay, not how much it costs ME to ship it, and I have no problem charging extra for shipping to cover my eBay costs - hence the "handling" part in "shipping and handling". (But most of the time I ship for free, because that brings in more bids.) Now, the bad packaging? No excuses for that. I'd file a complaint with PayPal for "not as described"*. Good luck! *If there's no tracking number, file it as "Item Not Received". It's a shitty, shitty thing to do, but I've seen a lot of "Not as Described" cases get chunked by PayNotYourPal because they basically say "we can't make that call." Which, if they can't, why have that option?

I won two tops on ebay a week ago from the same seller and asked the seller to send me an invoice of the total amount, because the auction stated that they would combine shipping for several purchases and to wait to pay until they send an invoice. I asked for the invoice twice now, and haven't heard anything. What should I do now?
