I get a lot of kids' clothes on there, and usually have good results. They're usually new or very gently worn, and fairly cheap, even with shipping. I tend to go for sellers that are individuals or on the small scale of business. I have made a few errors and bought things from CHINA that take forever to arrive, and are most likely not what they purport to be.
I have sold stuff on there successfully, most recently a CD burner and printer that was old but functional for around 1/3 of the price of it new. It was nice to get it out of the house AND get moolah for it. I can't be bothered to sell clothes on there or small stuff. I do it every now and then, list a bunch of stuff, a fraction of it sells, and I've spent all this time on it and then I STILL have to mail it out. Pain in the booty.

I don't mind the selling and listing, but figuring out the shipping and hope I don't screw it up and lose money by under-estimating it is what stops me from doing more on ebay. I like doing books because media mail is fairly easy to calculate.

I like doing books because media mail is fairly easy to calculate. I've often used a cheap kitchen/diet scale that goes up to 2 lbs to estimate the weight for shipping costs. Put on your packing materials, put on your item(s), round up a little. Those scales say "not for postal use," but I figure that's just because they're not promising absolute, to-the-gram precision--for figuring out whether my package would be 12 oz or 16 oz or whatever, it usually gave me an estimate that turned out to be accurate when I took my final package down to the PO. Years ago, I used to sell anime/manga goods online--not so much on ebay, but making a website and advertising my sales on various online communities. I have some stuff I really ought to sell off (especially with my upcoming move), but I know the market has changed soooooo much, and--this is crazy, but I feel really anxious about feelings of rejection if people don't want to buy my stuff.

Bleggh. I sold a pair of shoes on eBay a few days ago and still no payment or communication from the buyer.
Related, does anyone have an etsy shop? Is it worth it?

I, too, have had good luck buying on eBay. I've gotten a number of smocked dresses for the granddaughters as well as DVDs and some toys like Shopkins that the stores here can't keep in stock. I can usually find them on eBay. Haven't ever sold anything there, though.

I used to sell on eBay quite a bit, but I hadn't sold anything there in more than seven years (my address was listed on eBay as five addresses ago), so I was stunned when I had to choose if I wanted to offer buyer satisfaction. Hell no! That's the point of eBay! Fate! I think I did offer it, but it made me feel old and hard core.

Is there an option to offer Buyer Beware? Because that's what I would choose! I'm all like, No returns, stop asking me so many questions, it's 70% less than it would be new and in good condition, what the hell do you want from me? I have a pair of boots on there and the QUESTIONS people ask me. "Can you measure your foot in 17 different places, and do the same for the boot?" Then they make a best offer of 50% of the asking price. No thank you!

Has anyone had any experience selling women's clothing (specifically formal wear) online? My mom is interested in selling some of her dresses, but the local consignment stores are either turning their noses up at her offerings or just aren't offering enough to matter. I know about thredUP, but they don't want anything older than three years old--any advice?

Twice has been snapped up by eBay, but I'm getting ready to try Threadflip. divasahm, I completely forgot to mention Poshmark. I haven't sold anything yet, but I've done quite a bit of shopping there, and there's some nice stuff.

Can anyone explain to me the concept of placing a reserve on an item? Can't the seller just set a reasonable starting bid?
