Styling is everything! When the Golden Girls started, Bea, Betty and Estelle were 62/63. Current actresses that age are Angela Bassett, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sharon Stone, Kathy Najimy. Rue was only 51! Same age as Jennifer Anniston and Ellen Pompeo. Yet, the GGs looked like dowdy grandmas with their flowy pastels and church lady perms. Part of that can be attributed to the era, but the church lady perm lives on, except it's on 85-year-olds.
Will Demi's surgical "enhancements" wear off over time?

When my grandmother was in her 60s back in the 1980s, she would go to the salon and say, "Give me the old lady perm". I think that generation thought it was inappropriate to not "dress their age", like they would be opening themselves up to ridicule if it seemed they were trying to look younger. but the church lady perm lives on, except it's on 85-year-olds. I think the church lady perm lives on because it does effectively mask thinning and baldness. Perhaps upcoming generations will use extensions and wigs instead.

I am an older parent born to older parents. My mum got had her thick beautiful hair cut in that style because it was "appropriate." I also never saw her wear a pair of trousers that was not eleatic band round the middle. Saturday night was Golden Girls viewing when in the US. Mum liked the show but always reminded me that," women that age don't REALLY carry on that way." I am WELL into my 40s, and one of my kids is a pre schooler, and if my mum saw my (non revealing, but non golden girl style) wardrobe and style she would be horrified.

My hair started thinning about 5 years ago. At first I was horrified and styled my hair to cover the thinning spots, now I'm "eh, eff 'em if they don't like it". And, since I'm only 5'1 3/4", most people can see all the spots.

I had a female professor in grad school who had really thin hair and a large bald spot, and she made no effort whatsoever to hide it. She was a total badass who was feared/respected by all. If I'm not fortunate enough to be like my dad, who had a full head of hair when he passed away at age 71, I hope I'm self-confident enough to go that route.

It's definitely the awful styling. I was flipping channels the other day and saw her on some talk show and she looked great. Granted, it was a Zoom interview and maybe she had a filter going on, but she looked good. She looked good in "The Big Sick" and I think that was filmed just a couple years ago. Styling really matters so much. I mean, people like Drew Barrymore and Charlize Theron and Gwynnie are the same age now as, like, the actresses playing the moms on shows when they were teens, like 90210, and they look so much younger. I was thinking about this the other day and wondering if part of why 40 looks younger now is because actors can't lie about their ages as easily anymore. Maybe some of these old Hollywood stars were playing 40 when they were really 50-55 and it totally skewed our expectations for that age group?

Another aspect is that taking care of their appearance is part of their job, much more than it used to be IMO. And I think at this point it goes for both men and women. Daniel Craig is nearing 60 and since people are used to his ridiculous workout regime when he's Bond, basically forcing his body to appear and perform at a level of a man twenty years younger or so, he gets shit when he's not on a Bond schedule and starts looking like a normal man nearing 60. The whole superhero physique required of many leading men now. I mean, it was obvious that people like Cary Grant or later on Harrison Ford were fit in their movies, but not "10 hours in the gym every day" fit.
The parameters for women are different, but they're also expected to look perpetually young. Chances are, actors like Theron, Whitherspoon or Kidman know that they need to try to look twenty years younger than their age to stay competitive in Hollywood. Someone like Olivia Colman is in their age range and looks IMO perfectly appropriate for her age and she obviously takes good care of herself. But she is perceived as older than her peers because she doesn't follow that regime of plastic surgery, brutal workouts and undereating, it seems at least.

Except for the superhero tights, most men can hide a less than perfect physique under their wardrobe (in acting and in real life). A guy can have a bit of flab or not have a six pack, but still look good in an expensive suit. Women still get put in skintight cocktail dresses. A guy can hide a saggy ass in some stylish swim trunks, but a woman can't hide a thing in most swimsuits.
Back to the Golden Girls, maybe they were onto something. Demi is the same age they were then, but even Blanche the sexpot didn't wear skimpy skintight clothes. I bet they were more comfortable!

Rumer certainly is the one who looks the most like Demi and that's all I'VE got!
