I am so jealous that everyone has Halloween things to go to, and the costumes sound fabulous.

Just finished a peacock costume for my oldest in time for our Halloween party tomorrow!
Man do I hate hot glue guns. I am so not good with them. I keep pushing the things that I'm gluing together, and hot glue gets all over my hands. And that shit is HOT! But the peacock costume looks pretty good. It's very showgirl. That wasn't the original intent but I guess my subconscious took over - I love those massive showgirl costumes! Bye-bye, Bob Mackie. I'm in town now!

Halloween for foreigners is tonight here in Korea. I'm going to be a slutty cat lady. We'll see how it goes. I have hideous short-shorts with cat heads all over them, fishnets, a black crop top with cat hair all over it, a cardigan, and platform heels with leopard print accents.

Okay. Um, I'm gonna share my costume but be warned, some of my less-intimate friends were a bit scandalized by it. I haven't been anything bloody or scary since I was a kid, so I really wanted to do some gore this year...but it seems like a regular old zombie didn't have enough of a hook, especially since everyone's a zombie these days. Behold, zombie VMA Miley. Possibly NSFW. As least I didn't do Wrecking Ball Miley. For those who also saw my fascinator wedding photo, I've basically now shared my classiest and my tackiest looks on here. ETA the best part!! I made the leotard myself in 2 hours! I was frantic for an idea on Saturday (before a party) and got stuck driving to every Spirit store between Austin and here, but they've been sold out for weeks. So I bought a girdle at Burlington, then bought that fur (which has basically ruined my carpet with all its shedding) and a bunch of felt squares and glued it all together. My friend happened to have a foam finger.

Not a Halloween costume, but a great idea from a local parent. In spite of the vested commercial interests trying to make it so, Halloween is not big in Australia. It is not part of our national culture and tradition. There are Halloween costumes and products in the stores, but while a trickle of trick or treaters do doorknock, they are often met with the response that the occupants of the house don't believe in what is seen as yet another part of over-commercialised American culture invading us. I know the origins of Halloween, but here it is often seen as just that. So.... Yesterday I came home to find a note from a local parent. She advised that her little boy and some friends will be tricking or treating for Halloween. She also enclosed a balloon. If households want to participate, then she asked that they blow up the balloon and attach it to the letterbox. I think it's a great idea that will save little kids from being disappointed. I've already bought my treats.

What great foresight from the parents, ladyjane! The unofficial rule for trick or treaters and homeowners is porch light on + pumpkin or some kind of decoration = open for business. If the light is off, the kids don't knock. However there is one house in our neighbourhood, at the top of a long flight of stairs, no less, that decorates and leaves the light on every year and no one is ever home. It's like some cruel trick.
I love Halloween and I love trick or treating, both when I was doing it as a kid, as a young adult handing out the treats, and as a parent. It's the one time of year that you really see your neighbours out and about.
