HGTV and I both have Subaru Foresters (yeah, we're those lesbians) and love them. They are super safe and sturdy; no longer than a regular car (so it doesn't affect parking), but they are taller, which I like; and the all-wheel drive thing is not a load of hooey like I'd always thought! But one of the main reasons we got them is the ability to drive in snow, which I know isn't really applicable to your decision... but I'd still recommend them anyway. Mine is very basic, HGTV's has all the bells and whistles and they are both awesome cars. Potential down arrow: They make very few manuals, which I believe I remember is your preference. My last car was a Corolla. I had it for 12 years and it was a ridiculously great car. I only got rid of it because it was never any good in snow (even when brakes and tires were brand new. I could never figure out why that was) and I'm getting older and more fretful about stuff like that. I kinda miss it. ETA: HGTV had a Mazda 3 for 9yrs and LOVED it. It was a great car and def has more style than a Corolla. She never had a single problem with it. She gave it to our nephew as his first car.

We have a ford focus hatch that Batboy mostly drives now - it's done well for us in the few years that we've had it. Our other car is a Nissan Rogue, but it's only a few months old so we haven't developed thoughts on long-term ownership (although it's paid off in the lower mileage over our old Ford Flex, which we loved save for the gas consumption.)

A Ford Focus hatch was on my Reasonably Priced Car list, so I'm glad to know. For new cars, a Mini is the same price as a Subaru Crosstrek. I like smallish, boxy, hatchbacks. If pressed, my dream car is a VW Squareback (orange preferred, but not picky), so...
But the mechanic called and thankfully both stupid repairs were done under $300.

I too have a Honda Fit. Got it the first year they were available. It's a 2007 (got it in 2006) with 150,000 miles on it. Aside from the annoying issue with the 3rd cylinder, it's still a peach. I love driving it. I haven't had (knock on wood) any major repairs (a broken axle -$250, and replaced the muffler - it snows here, so rust...) so far. I change to oil every 7,000 or so miles.
I still love my little car.
And to this day, we've only found one thing that didn't fit in the Fit. (A 5' x 5' bookshelf)

So, due to some cosmic providence, the idea of buying a new car is suddenly not out of the question. I know statistically this is a good time of year (fall, overlap of model years, and specifically on the day I write this, the end of the month) to buy a car, and my mother, who is usually pretty sensible about these things recommended I stop putting money into my current car and start looking. Well, the car I want is a VW Golf GTI. The auto journalists seem to think it's a good car, but it seems so lavish compared to my history of used Hondas.
Can anyone give me any testimony about long-term VW ownership? Or berate me in re: the TDI scandal or anything else I should consider?

One of my favorites. Not the same animal, I know, but that car has always given me warm fuzzies about the idea of owning another.

The 1970s square back VW is my dream car. What color was it? My dad commuted in a yellow 1968 bug for years (with ladybug floor mats) and that also imprinted on me.

Imagine this without the sunroof and all the darker blue color. That was Celeste, and she was a great car.

*gasps* Wow. 10/10 would buy. I would spend my weekends in my driveway polishing it, too.

I'm finally going to bite the bullet and buy a new car. I'm choosing between a Rav 4 and a Mazda CX5. Any advice for a female who will be negotiating this on her own? As in, I can't find anyone to go with me (which is a whole other story on the people in my life not being there when I really need them), but I'm looking to bite the bullet on the July 30th-31st weekend.
Anyway, i know men and women are treated differently in terms of car buying, what can I do so I'm not taking advantage of?
