Sort of—about 15 years ago, my boyfriend at the time inherited his caravan from his grandfather. It held up well and was a pretty sweet ride, with a good AC, and it was easy to remove the seats and put them back in. I have no biases against minivans, having learned to drive in a VW Vanagon. We had the VW stationwagon...I think the Vanagon was a step up, quite frankly. VW Squareback is my dream car.

We're getting ready to drive to the Florida panhandle from Austin in a couple of weeks, and Mr. d is balking at taking his two-year-old Mazda 6, mainly because it's a standard transmission and I don't drive standard (I literally have a doctor's note from college saying that standard transmissions would place undue stress and wear on my damaged L4 and L5 discs). My 2008 Honda Odyssey is in good shape, and would probably make the trip all right, but for some reason, I'm feeling a little antsy about taking it cross-country (it just hit 100K about a month ago). It just passed inspection and I don't have any actual reason to be concerned other than age--anybody want to talk me into taking the more comfortable vehicle?

I dunno - I am still driving my 2001 Mazda 626, which I love and it has never given me any trouble. It has about 108k miles on it. Just a coincidence that it’s a Mazda when I’m trying to compare it with your Odyssey 😀I wouldn’t hesitate to hit the road with it. As long as you have AAA or similar, I’d say Go for it.
(My car is pretty much at the point that if something does go wrong, it will cause more to fix than the car is worth, so I have actually been thinking about replacing it with a Mazda 6. Aside from the standard shift issue, how do you like yours?)

I have a 2010 Town and Country. Now, sure we just put a new engine it, but the original had 180,000 miles on it. Frankly, I would expect a well cared for Odyssey to go much longer than a 2010 T&C.
Road Excitement!
Yesterday as we were driving across PA on I-80, our brakes crapped out. We pushed our luck, and got off the hiway in DuBois. Going down the ramp involved some pretty athletic downshifting and pedal-pumping. We pulled into a Sheetz, and discovered the rear caliper had over-extended, and was bleeding brake fluid.
The first place we called was about a mile away in downtown. We carefully made our way there, and they said we needed lines, rotors and a caliper.
They sent us around the corner to Luigi’s for lunch, where we both had outta this world lasagna for $10. As we finished, the garage called and said the van was ready.
Total time from losing brakes on Interstate to getting back on the road: 2hrs 15min.
Then, as we left the Mass Turnpike for 495, stage manager noted our lights were dim and our voltage was low. We pulled off in Framingham, and, admitting defeat, crashed in a Red Roof.
This morning, we limped the van to a Firestone center, rented a Caravan and were only 20 minutes late to load in at the Rochester (NH) Opera House.
Van will be ready to pick up in the morning, and we will reload the gear and head home.
This is the big time, girly. This is Rock ‘n’ Roll’ [/R’n’R High School]

Aside from the standard shift issue, how do you like yours?) He likes it a lot--he prefers lower, sportier transmissions that make him feel like Speed Racer. Me, not so much--it's not always fun to try to stabilize my back when he's darting in and out of traffic... ...and I think I just talked myself into taking the Odyssey. (It doesn't hurt that the dealership we purchased it from has contacted me every six months for the last couple of years offering me top dollar for a trade-in--2008 Odysseys are apparently the gold standard.

My 2000 Toyota Sienna had 239,000 miles on it before I totaled it on the BQE in 2017. It had just passed inspection and I had no qualms about taking it on the road trip.

My little Scion broke a bolt on a brake caliper. The easy fix would have been to replace the whole part but my car the year it was born wasn't sold in Canada so they don't have that part available here so we're going for the hard fix which is grinding out the broken bolt and rebuilding the thing. I hope this works because this whole repair is going to cost about $1400. If it doesn't work I'll have to wait several weeks while the part is ordered in from the US. Great way to roll into the Christmas season.
