I want to buy one of those countertop icemakers as a Christmas gift. A friend of mine has the GE Opal which makes the nugget ice cubes, like the kind you get at Sonic, and that’s probably the one I will wind up getting. But it’s a little pricey at $500 on Amazon. So before I invest, I was wondering if anybody else had countertop icemakers recs. I do definitely want a machine that makes the little pebble/nugget ice cubes.

After hearing for years how if I won the lottery I would buy one of those giant hotel ice machines, my husband got me the GE Opal for my birthday last year. We returned it. It took forrrevvvver to make ice. We use a lot of ice here (we all fill our water bottles with it throughout the day) and the machine just wasn’t producing enough.

I personally consume at least 2-3 trays of ice cubes per day. Some houseguests came once and used up my substantial ready ice supply at once on a cooking project and left me two cubes, thinking that's all anyone should need for a cold beverage. They got an earful. Ice lovers unite!
I have no advice in ice makers though, I just think it's awesome to have one.

Keep it clean, if they use the same plastic like in refrigerators, the plastic tends to absorb odors.

I know!!! I just use my regular icemaker and, if I want it to be crushed, I put it in a plastic bag and beat the Hell out of it with a rolling pin. But this is for my dad and he needs something a little bit easier!

There was one of those lists I read on Buzzfeed a few weeks ago - things in your rich friends' houses that show they are rich. Something like that. One of the items was a refrigerator with a water dispenser/icemaker. That list is about 20-30 years out of date and whoever wrote it must not have shopped for a refrigerator in the past 10 years because it's almost impossible to buy a refrigerator now without an icemaker. I tried. I did not succeed.

We LOVE the icemaker on our fridge. We're pretty sure all of our kitchen appliances are original to the house, which was built in 1998/1999. We bought it in late 2007, and they certainly weren't new then. But they're all still kicking, probably because they aren't energy-efficient and don't have a lot of the fancy/digital stuff that can break quickly. Over the last few months, though, I've noticed somethings are starting to give: one set of lights on the dishwasher no longer light up and I have to push the "bake" button a few times on the oven to turn it on. With the fridge, the icemaker is getting a little wonky. It will stop making ice, so we have to turn it off for a couple of hours, then turn it back on. I was worried a couple of weeks ago because we had to turn it off several times, but then it kicked back into gear.
I suspect we will probably need to replace it sometime next year, and I have no illusions that a new fancy fridge will last 20 years plus!

I am absolutely mortified that I can recall a Buzzfeed listicle in such detail (MORTIFIED) but I believe that particular post was culled from replies to a reddit thread, and the original poster on reddit was not American. And we definitely do have more ~luxurious appliances than most other countries! Anyway you ice lovers are all freaks #teamtepid.

All future houseguests of yours need to bring a few bags of ice with them 😉 I know Chik Fil A is problematic BUT you can buy bags of their nugget ice to bring home. And they’re big bags!
