kateln - it all worked out. I had to click around and find the actual full download of both silverlight and flash rather than just expect an update within my web browsers to work. Nice that they made it easy on us, right? I'm just annnoyed that there was no notification that this was going to happen from Netflix. Stupid Netflix.

I fucking HATE Microsoft so goddamn much. Of COURSE the Silverlight Update doesn't work for Google Chrome on my Mac. Which means Netflix Instant is wonky. It's not like Chrome is now, briefly, the world's most popular web browser or anything. ah, microsoft, I use to use them for awhile. One thing you might try if you have a decently fast machine is oracle virtualbox. I have been using it on a lenova for testing software in linuxmint and and old backup I had that I need to do in XP. So far no wierd issues (you need a good amount of ram). flash works pretty darn well in a virtual machine. Oracle virtualbox is free

Can anyone recommend an easy, fairly inexpensive way to convert VHS tapes to digital files? I'd like to edit some of the videos into clips (maybe to upload to YouTube).
Equipment on hand: I have an HP laptop running Windows 7, an old (we're talking mid-90s) RCA VCR, and a red/yellow/white cable. I am a MORON when it comes to this kind of thing, so please dumb it down for me. Many thanks in advance!

There's about a minute of annoying chitchat at the beginning. I also found some info on cnet, which is my favorite tech site (nb: I am also kind of a moron, but cnet describes things really, really well). You will probably need to invest in a video capture device, or borrow one. Good luck! And report back!

Thanks, chonies! For some reason, I hadn't thought to check cnet, even though I love them for computer/TV/tech reviews. I'll let you know how it goes when I get it figured out!

I just started doing that recently -- I bought a little device for less than £10 which connects my VHS player to the USB port on my laptop, and it came with an installation CD. Super easy, you just plug it in, fire up the programme that's on the CD, play a tape, and what's playing shows up on your screen to be recorded. I did have to buy a new scart-phono lead because the first one I had didn't work (apparently some only work in one direction, so I got a switchable one where you can change the direction).

I just updated my iphone app today, because the old one suddenly locked me out, and was telling me I didn't have permission to log back in.
New version says the same thing. Obviously, I am allowed in, but I am here thru Safari on my iPad. Anyone have any ideas?

Log out on your browser, then try the iPhone?

My iPhone app has done the same thing to me. It made me so paranoid I changed my password, but I think it's some kind of glitch with the app.

Well, ain't this a kick in the head. After updating the app and the iphone OS, I can now use the phone app. BUT only on a wifi network, which I never use because it kills the battery and I mostly use the phone app whenever I get a few minutes while out traipsing around, or worse, while riding in the van on the way to a gig in the middle of nowhere.
They better fix this, or I might start to think AT&T have come up with a new way to bottleneck my data usage....
