I have literally no idea what I'm talking about, but I wonder if the Roku needs to be routed to an intermediate device like a DVD player or something. Not because it's a Roku, but that the DVD player would be more modern than the TV, and might thingy the connection thing more better.

My credentials are that I have once hooked up a Roku, but does the TV have any buttons on it? Sometimes if you push the buttons in a particular sequence, it mirrors some of the remote buttons. (You may be able to google the manual for the TV)
The other option: if the cable remote has "source" or "aux" or "video 1" "video 2" buttons, I think one of those should work, if you haven't tried them already.

I'm in the market for buying a DSLR--I don't need anything fancy, and I don't intend to have a photography business, but a million years ago when photography involved a darkroom, I was competent with lenses and junk. Is there a serious difference between Canon and Nikon? I was a Minolta gal, so I don't have a vested interest in either brand. What else should I look for? I've read through CNET until my eyes crossed, and I have a suspicion that the package deals at Sam's and Best Buy might not be a good purchase in the long run. Should I just take my $800 and spin around and buy what I land on?

Chonies, give me a chance to get home to something other than a phone to post with, I'll take you through it. I own entirely too many cameras, and have a good handle on it.

My dad was a "professional" photographer in the late '80's. Most of the pros back then preferred Nikon but the other brands seem to have upped their game. The best thing to do would be to go to an actual camera store (assuming you can find one, they are about like video stores these days) and talk to them. This guy reviews a few and his top pick is Nikon. I took a darkroom class in college and enjoyed it thoroughly. Some community colleges offer them and it's very interesting (and expensive!). There's something very calming about being in a darkroom although some of the chemicals smell like rotten eggs.

I need help! I am trying to set up a Roku to an older TV - not mine. It has the old school cables, not HDMI, with the red, yellow and blue connections. I am pretty sure I've got everything set up correctly. What I can't do is figure out how to get this older TV to show the auxiliary device (i.e. the roku). I think I only have the remote for the cable (Comcast), not the original TV remote. I am looking to see if that's anywhere. Any help?? Ladyboy, depending on your TV model (most models 2000 and up) you probably need the remote to "select" the source for your auxiliary device. If you can read the serial number off of the TV, you can find a compatible or even the original remote online pretty easily. I've had to do that for several dog-eaten remotes. The Roku should plug directly into your TV (I think red/yellow/blue should be equivalent to red/yellow/white). Sometimes there's a source/select button on your TV itself. Good luck!

Thanks, all. I am getting the remote delivered here by the landlord in a few days so hopefully we'll have the Roku up and running shortly. The baby can't live without Caillou (BUT I CAN!!)

Caillou is a whiny little turd, and I am heartily glad that both of my girls are over him and his little, bald head. O/T: I just upgraded to an iPhone 5s, and I'm looking for some recommendations for some free/inexpensive apps that you all "can't live without". Thanks!

The Weather Channel app. I find that the built-in weather app isn't as informative or accurate.
