Miranda and Samantha always had the best one-liners. Carrie thought she was clever, she had some good ones, but those two always cracked me up.

I agree that Miranda and Samantha had the best lines, but it was Charlotte's facial expressions which really cracked me up. That actress (Kristin Davis?) is also a fantastic crier. The way her face would just crumple . . .

Last night I got to see the show's Series Finale on DVD, and I just loved the episode, and I'm somewhat ashamed to admit, but I actually cried throughout the last 15 minutes of the show.
I just thought it ended exquisitely. Charlotte, the waspy Presbyterian Park Avenue Princess, after all those years pining after what she thought was her dream life, finds her happiness with a bald Jew, a litter of mutts, and an adopted baby from China. Miranda, who for so long had so many issues with dealing with men, with dealing with love, with expressing love, with getting past issues, etc--there she was in a situation of having to move to Brooklyn and having to take in Steve's mother, and she accepted it all and delt with it amazingly. All those years she had so much trouble telling Steve she loved him, and here she realized that even if she's not all warm and fuzzy about it, she's so capable of showing the people she cares about that she loves them. Samantha, the biggest and proudest hooch in New York, who never compromised her sense of self because of what people may have thought about her, finally finds a guy who loves her just the way she is, and she never had to worry about changing herself. It wasn't about changing for Sam and Smith, it was about growing and blossoming, just like the flowers he sent to her. And Carrie, who for so long held onto her notions of fantasy, comes together with Big, and even though their story isn't like a Fairy Tale, they accept each other because they do genuinely love one another. Even if there are short falls and they have problems and issues, they love each other.
And even though the characters all changed so much by the end of the series, they didn't present it in a way like they had suddenly become so mature and sensible or anything like that. Because I hate that notion that someday you'll just be so MATURE and you'll stop wanting the things you want. That's what I loved about the show--even if people thought it was unrealistic (which it definitely was, many many times) or they just weren't comfortable with all the sex and the show's premise, it was a show about characters who never let their self-love/convictions/whatever drop because of anything, even if that came off as narcicisstic or something, and the show was never mean-spirited. It wasn't like so many network TV shows where something bad happens to a character and then a laugh track starts blaring so we can all find goofy humor in their misery.
There were times when I got kind of sick of it and I think all of the criticisms of this show are 100% legitimate, but gosh, I just loved this show.

This was one of my favorite shows ever. i liked the way they ended everyhting except for Carrie. How could they put her with Big. They made him out to be her saviour. We knew he cheated on his first wife. He never treated Carried right when they were together. He married someone else and slept with Carrie in their bed. Natasha caught them and the results were disasterous. He's not a good guy, and he wasn't good for Carrie. Big mistake.

I was watching an ep on TBS last night and as much of an ass as Big was, I did agree with him when he asked "are you moving to Paris for yourself because I won't always be there " or something to that effect. Carrie (understandably because he was always pushing her away) freaked - but what he said was true. If she was going to move it needed to be for her and not for a man. Even proven true when she followed Alexander to Paris and was miserable because he wasn't by her side all the time.

Miranda's line, "Cancel the rice pudding", after that always cracks me up. Actuallly that was Carries line, and it wasn't nearly as funny as it would have been as Miranda had said it. Miranda was always my favorite character, I loved the episiode where she got into the takeout food rut and went to confront the "giggling girl". Oh and the sandwich epsiode, where of course Miranda takes the sandwiches "Eat me" as sexual. And the one when she goes on the date with the sexy cop and relizes he's to handsome. So she takes him home ans says "Im no Mena Suvari but im great in bed!" Love Love Love Miranda. I also love how in the "funky spunk" epsiode Carrie says "Why don't you just stop giving him head?" and she pauses and says "I never thought of that." Cracks me up every time. One thing that annoys me is Charlotte or more the actress that plays her. She should be pretty but her mouth is too big or off center or something, it bugs me when she smiles.

I just caught show's finale last week, and I too was flabbergasted at Carrie's asinie behavior. She's in Paris and all she can do is walk around in her little costumes, shove truffles in her mouth and smoke? That's a pretty good day for me. But besides her stupid attitude: Dude, you're a writer (supposedly), why don't you write something! At least try! I think that's what's always bugged me about this show. As a writer myself, Carrie always acted like she had no internal world at all (and we've all met people like that), but usually they aren't writers. She's the most unwriterly writer I've ever seen. Shouldn't she at least read on occasion? That bugged me a lot.
But, yeah, she was a brat in Paris. And yet, I still will watch this show because somehow it speaks to me, despite its annoyances.

I have such a love-hate relationship with this show. I think it's hilarious and I love the glamour and especially the sexual situations, but at its best the show aimed at a higher level between comedy and a genuine exploration of modern relationships, and didn't make it in the end, so that was frustrating.
First, the comedy. The episode where Carrie farts in bed! The episode where Charlotte doesn't want to have it up the butt! The one where Miranda dates the guy who wants her to talk dirty (ROCK! HARD! SAUSAGE!!). Hee hee hee. My friends and I would call each other after the episodes and laugh our asses off. Even the later episodes had me howling at the utterly realistic fights between couples: Carrie and Aidan screaming about how many deodorants he keeps in the bathroom, or Charlotte finally dropping her WASP demeanor and telling Trey to stick the cardboard baby up his ass. Priceless.
But as everyone has noticed, Carrie's refusal to grow up got more and more grating as time went on. And I hate the way she ended up with Big. Yeah, they had smokin' chemistry, but after what they had done to themselves and all the collateral damage, for me it was a betrayal of the "girl power" ethos of the whole series for Carrie to go back to such a shallow loser. She had her shallow side too but ultimately her character was seeking something real, and the whole point of Big is that he wasn't; he didn't have what it takes to be real. It was especially disappointing because it was clear that in the episode with Big's heart attack, the writers were going to have Carrie let him go for good, and I remember around the introduction of the Alexander character, SJP gave interviews hinting that Alexander was "the one". I think the writers and SJP caved when Alexander didn't catch on with viewers, and decided to go for the crowd-pleasing finale, complete with sudden trashing of Alexander's character (he becomes an abuser? Hello?) That cowardice makes the series a bit less than great TV for me.
Now I just enjoy it for the shiny happy sex-gags-and-fashion stuff. I have the DVDs and plan to rewatch it in a few years to see how it holds up over time...and as I get older, too!

I have just gotten the box set of this so I am gradually going through the series again.
I for one were glad that Carrie did not end up with Alexander as they had no chemistry and he was a total uninteresting bore. I liked the chemistry she had with Big, but oh how many times he used her and she would go back to him time and time again. Hello?? I thought maybe there was going to be a new guy altogether or that Carrie would end up being independent and on her own. I guess her heart always belonged to him and it is left up to our imaginations as to whether it would have lasted forever.
I was happy in general in how the show ended. A character that I never used to go much on ended up being a favourite - Miranda. The best character IMO though was Samantha. The writers gave her all the best lines.

I love, love, love the show but towards the end I had to start fast forwarding through all of Carrie's storylines. First of all, SJP's acting completely slipped. She stopped embodying the characater and began to "act," ya know? Charlotte's storyline was my absolute favorite. I would watch an entire series dedicated to her and Miranda.
I'm not surprised that Carrie ended up with Big but I am curious about the alternate ending that is supposed to be out there somewhere. Has anyone seen it?
