How the hell is L&O: SVU still on? I mean, seriously, how many more hours of offensive, cringeworthy subject matter can the collective audience handle? I know the Law & Order brand name has an almost thirty-year durability behind it, but come on. It got embarrassing a decade ago (and always was, really, as a concept.)
Let it die, NBC. Seriously.

I know! Aren't Mariska Hardtosay and Ice-T bored out of their skulls playing the same characters for close to two decades? And on a procedural show too, which by its nature doesn't have a lot of time for character development.

They're probably making so much bank, they don't care.... but I agree SVU should be allowed to die....

I preferred the original to SVU, and I miss the older detectives. Paul Sorvino was a great partner for Chris Noth.

OMG--I took yesterday off and I saw that We had a Criminal Intent marathon programmed, so I clicked? And IT WAS SEASON ONE ORIGINAL. Like, there is no possible losing in this scenario. There was the IRA one, the abortion one, the kidney theft one...I was in heaven. As far as SVU, I never really liked it because there was too much character development. I thought the backstories were too forced an uninteresting. When they did dip into character development in the original, it was not nearly as heavy-handed, and it seemed more organic. Oh, and it was eked out sparingly over several seasons, not Intense Character Backstory Drama from the beginning. Even Criminal Intent held back a bit. That said, I know there is a lot of criticism about the show's central premise of a sex crimes procedural; I don't disagree with the Shakesville POV, but I also think that since it's a cultural product, it has different meanings for different viewers.

SVU actually got better for a little while when they added Danny Pino and Kelly Giddish. I think they also changed showrunners around that time and it showed, in a good way. There's a solid run of episodes, right after Stabler left, that feel a bit more old-school. It's so disappointing that the show backslid in such a big way. (Raul Esparza's also a fantastic addition of course, but he came in later, on the cusp of when the writing started to get stupid again.)
At its best, I thought SVU presented some really interesting moral dilemmas. The episode about the girl with Down's syndrome who got pregnant and wanted to keep the baby, while her caregiver/mother wanted her to abort, was a really interesting hour of TV.

And it's showing Original Recipe from season one? *has the vapors* I would have that on constantly if I had access to it. Hahaha. I so miss my American Sunday morning routine: viewing This Week, CBS Sunday Morning and then Law & Order Original Recipe while perusing newspapers/magazines online and usually having pancakes or French toast for breakfast. *sigh*
