My local news actually cut their broadcast short for once, so it only started about 20 minutes late here. My local news finally ended. The opening wasn’t quite as funny as I expected, but the end made up for it.

Didn’t get all the way through the show yet (THANKS FOOTBALL) but man, most of what I saw was hot garbage. I guess I’m not in Dave Chappelle’s target audience, because everyone tells me he’s a comedy legend, and I didn’t really laugh, especially after we busted out the AIDS joke. Smoking on stage? What is this, 1985?

Today's Dave Chappelle is not the same Dave Chappelle people love(d). I will listen to his standup special, Killing Them Softly, over and over again but couldn't get through his latest Netflix specials. This Dave seems bitter and a little too pleased with himself.

I realized what I posted made me sound like a pearl clutching Karen. Some of the stuff in his monologue was funny in an uncomfortable way, like, I get. But going on and on about Ohio, “the guy from TV is at the grocery store” and then the aforementioned AIDS joke took things downward. By the end of it I felt like I was getting yelled at by a drunk preacher.

I’m just embarrassed that I didn’t see that punchline coming weeks ago when they cast Jim Carrey as Biden!

I will listen to his standup special, Killing Them Softly, over and over again but couldn't get through his latest Netflix specials. This Dave seems bitter and a little too pleased with himself. Yeah, if you compare his show from last night to the SNL he did just four years ago, I think there’s a stark contrast. He had some funny moments, but I agree he just seems so bitter and too pleased with himself. I know his big thing at the end was about not hating each other, but his mood seems to scream the opposite to me like he’s over everything. I couldn’t blame him for that, but having someone that seems like they don’t want to even be doing what they’re doing anymore isn’t very fun to watch. Plus I don’t know maybe it was just me, but starting his monologue about Netflix and HBO Max making money off of him without paying him instead of say the election or something like that just seemed to show where his head really was. Not that it’s not worth talking about corporate greed, but he didn’t seem to do anything with it except to complain that they weren’t paying him. Yeah, I think he made several excellent points like about the people that don’t want to wear masks, and made some good points about white people and the drug epidemic, but some of it I cringed at like that whole thing about the stimulus money and people wanting to collect that rather than work. That seems to be one of those false talking points that people on Facebook believe and spread like the myth about how hospitals get more money for patients with COVID-19, so I was disappointed with that. The Freddy Mercury thing was terrible too. It really did feel like he was a comedian from the ‘80s with the smoking, and the AIDS joke. I don’t mind shock comedy, but that seemed so dated, and the only thing shocking about it was that he was saying it in 2020. The rest of the show was okay. The skit about the spokespersons was funny to me because of the breaking, but it really should have been done in the first or second episode of the season where it was more relevant. Likewise the OJ skit could have been funny, but it didn’t really go far enough with it imo. That’s the only two skits I remember Chappelle being in. Maybe there was more, but the fact that they didn’t use him very much compared to other hosts, was another indication that he didn’t really want to be there.

Michael Che was clearly buzzed during Weekend Update, which was far more amusing to me than anything Dave Chappelle did.

I always anticipate with Chappelle that his stuff is going to be a mixed bag - some of it will be incisive, some of it will be offensive, some of it will be funny and some of it won't.
Hasn't Chappelle been in a Prince-style battle with Comedy Central for years over the rights to his show? It seemed a little self-obsessed to bring up in the context of last night, but whatever.
He loves to tell everyone about how he moved to a small town on Ohio, as if he wants everyone to admire him for being a regular guy. But he doesn't like Ohioans not treating him like a big celebrity when they see him in the grocery store. That was a very "Don't you know who I am?" celebrity moment. And taking credit for saving the whole town? Ok...
What I really didn't like was the echo of Bill Burr's monologue a few weeks ago of a blatantly misogynistic non-joke that just amounted to the statement, "When are awful and deserve to be treated like crap." Neither of them either really bothered to pretend to be ironic about it. And Chappelle is untouchable to any feedback at this point - if you don't like what the brilliant comedian has to say, you are the one with the problem.
As for the rest of SNL, the goofy Aunt Jemima/Uncle Ben sketch did make me laugh just because of the mood. And then they attempted to prolong to silly mood with that horrendous, interminable Super Mario Brothers sketch which did not work at all.
And the Foo Fighters' first song was just terrible, but that's ok they can be bad.

Well that was weird. I haven't watched the whole show yet, but I did like the intro into the spokesperson sketch and the subsequent breaking character.

This morning I suggested we listen to it again. “NO.” Heh.
