They haven't explained exactly why he hasn't told Kem. Or for that matter, why he hasn't told ANYBODY. Yes, they are "split up". But then again, not really. They got married a few years ago. And from what I gather, it has been an on again, off again type situation. Kem has a job that keeps her pretty busy and Carter was running a refugee camp.
But even if they are split up it's obviously not an angry type split. When he talks about her there's no bitterness. And when he called her it was almost as if he had just talked to her very recently. It's all very strange.

Man, I was hoping that kidney wouldn't make it to Chicago in time. Carter is never going to die is he? DOUG! CAROL! DOUG AND CAROL! Ah. Old school ER. At least we got a chance to glimpse into their lives one last time.

I haven't watched ER in years, not since Without A Trace came along. But I watched this ep for old time's sake and really enjoyed it, even though I don't know any of the new doctors. When Doug asked Neela about all the old County General peeps, why didn't he ask about Carter? The part of me that likes all things neat and tied up wanted Doug and Carol to know they helped get Carter his kidney.
The ep felt like one of those cheesy "Where are they now?" or "here's what happened to all our characters after the movie" bits, minus the cheese.
I also liked the little throw away lines about periphery characters: "Reese is 13 already?" "The girls (Doug and Carol's twins) are unhappy about a spelling test." "Cleo is looking after Reese" "You're still with Cleo?"

I was kind of frustrated by Doug and Carol never finding out that the kidney was for Carter. But I've been trying to remember if they ever really interacted with Carter all that much, I think while they were still on the show Carter interacted mostly with Greene, Benton, Lewis, and the various interns. I don't recall there being a story with Carter and Ross and/or Carol.

I love the fact that Carol and Doug never found out Carter was the one that received the kidney. It just would have been so cheesy if they did. Not to mention one major HIPPA violation if someone had spilled the beans. Telling Carol a doctor received the kidney was certainly pushing it.
As others have said I loved this trip down memory lane with these characters. I haven't watched ER in years mainly because I just don't give two flips about the characters on there now. I have to give the actors props for how easily it seemed they slipped back into character. The actors could have easily phoned in their performances but they didn't. Also, I think the writers did a good job with the characterization of the old gang.
I can't believe I'm admitting this but my favorite scenes were Carter/Benton. Don't get me wrong I love Doug and Carol and it was great to see them again. But I always figure that Doug and Carol were together and happy in Seattle. It was nice seeing how Benton was doing. Plus, the Carter/Benton relationship is so complex. They couldn't stand each other in the beginning gradually turned into a love/hate relationship and finally is now a pretty affectionate relationship (well affectionate by Benton standards).

The Benton/Carter relationship is my favorite ever on this show. It even beats out Doug/Carol for me. Of course Doug/Mark is right up there in the best category as well.
Benton ADORES Carter. It started off that Carter got on his nervers. Plus I think Benton was doubly put off when he found out Carter was wealthy. I'm not sure exactly when things started to change but Benton grew to love Carter.
I think about when Carter was stabbed and Benton was so concerned. He didn't want anybody else near Carter. He wanted to operate himself so it would be perfect. Then there was the scene of him fighting with Carter to go to rehab. Then the goodbye scene in season 8. Now them reuniting in season 15 and Benton still wanting things to be perfect for Carter. If Carter needs Benton, Benton is there.
I noticed ER does friendships MUCH better then romantic relationships. Other then Doug/Carol I can't think of another truly amazing romantic, well written relationship on this show.

Susan/Mark before Sherry Stringfield left the show (the first time) was fantastic, as far as unrequited, can't quite get it together love goes.

God, when Carter and Kellie Martin were stabbed.......I think that might have been some of the most shocking television that I have ever seen. I rarely watched ER, but happened to be flipping around that night. My jaw just dropped, it took awhile to shake off those images.

I still haven't shaken those images! Those scenes were really scary.
I loved the episode where Benton has appendicitis(?) and Carter performs the surgery ... I think he played "Ride of the Valkyries" in the operating room.

Whenever I hear that song I automatically get those images in my head, it was for me the most effective scene of violence ever in the show. And because of that I can't really watch David Krumholz in anything else.
