Well, before he sold them out River did slash/stab him. So he was motivated (by that and money, of course), which I guess would be more chaotic neutral than neutral evil.
But he did dump his partner in Canton -- before dumping the money. Is that evil or just keeping his best interests first and foremost? I agree that it's a tough call. But if you put someone like Mal in chaotic neutral (we originally had him in true neutral, but moved him after reading the Player's Handbook), it makes Jayne seem more neutral evil in comparison. Sure, Mal has no qualms about killing people, but I think he feels differently about it than Jayne does. As Jayne says, "Hell, I'll kill a man in a fair fight... or if I think he's gonna start a fair fight, or if he bothers me, or if there's a woman, or if I'm gettin' paid - mostly only when I'm gettin' paid. But these Reavers... last ten years they show up like the bogeyman from stories. Eating people alive? Where's that get fun?"
So... I'm still inclined to think more chaotic neutral than neutral evil, because I simply don't think he's evil. But he does fit the neutral evil description better, I think, whereas Mal fits the chaotic neutral (or true neutral, maybe).

I bought without the DVD's without having seen a full episode - yep, I have that much love for Joss Whedon.
I love it. It's a crying shame the show was cancelled, because for all its flaws there's still a lot of crap on TV, and I loved the mix of hi and lo-tech, and the cast had great chemistry. The show had so much potential, and so much to explore, it could really have gone to some interesting places.
And I thought Jayne was hot too. Evil and often gross, but also hot.

I bought the entire set of dvd's on the basis of the Serenity trailer alone. I'd never heard of the show, but there was something in that trailer (hmmm Nathan Fillion?) that just struck a chord. I love this show. Always will.

Jayne is the very definition of a gag and shag. But he's also hilarious..."The man they call meeeee!" But I think I'd probably do every guy on that ship except Book. Joss sure knows how to write and cast for women's enjoyment.
Love this show too. It's really such a pity that Fox cancelled it. It had such huge potential.

I watched this show when it first aired and was angry when cancelled. It wasn't given the chance it deserved.
I looked on this as one of the best shows written and wished it had been able to go a few more rounds.
I'm glad to see that Serenity was helped to be made because of the reaction to the demands of fans of the show. I remember reading that Firefly was the one show that he created that he was actually hurt by being cancelled. He felt it was his best writing.

Just want to say that this is the # 1 item on my "DVDs to buy" list. Last time I went to my usual store, they were all out. Guess I'm not the only one!
P.S. I've never actually seen any of the episodes, though - which is why I can't wait!

Aww, all the Firefly love makes me so happy! My life plan now is to become head of a network so I can bring the show back.
