The Cold Case moment that stands out in my mind is in an episode aout a woman who was killed (I think by her boyfriend) while working in an aircraft plant during World War II. After her murder was solved and she was finally laid to rest, we see her fade out in an ending montage to Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters' recording of "Don't Fence Me In."[/color] It was an unexpected choice and just the right bittersweet tone. "Let me be by myself in the evening breeze/And listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees/Send me off forever, but I beg you please/Don't fence me in."

Now that song still reminds me of the CSI: Miami episode that used it when it was the music playing while Alexx did the porn star's autopsy. When they used it on Six Feet Under, I was all, "They are copying CSI:Miami?!?! HEEEE!"
I laughed and laughed about this critically acclaimed show copying CSI: Miami. It is a great song and I love it, but when I hear that song, I think about the dead porn star and Speed being all sweet and gentlemanly with the dead porn star's porn star best friend. And then I remember the stupid way they killed Speed in the next episode and I cry.
I swear when The Wire uses music it is almost always brilliant. Herc playing the theme from Shaft had me on the floor laughing until I cried.

'Montage' from South Park has to be one of the best scenes from the show. Too bad they ruined the fun by re-using the song in Team America.
The "Official Participation" theme song montage in the Corner Gas episode where Oscar helps Davis get back into shape also kills me. I don't think I'm old enough to actually remember it being on TV, but my brothers had made it into such lore that I didn't really believe the song existed until that episode.

I could have sworn that I posted about the use of Cass Elliot's "Make Your Own Kind of Music" in the season 2 premiere of Lost! For my money, the scene with Jack down in the hatch with the song suddenly starting up is probably one of the best uses of music you normally wouldn't think of choosing that works 100% perfectly with that scene. The contrast is what does it - I mean, there he is, down in this dark scary tunnel, on this island out in the middle of nowhere. He's dirty, he's scared, he has no idea what he'll find. Then all of a sudden - blinding light, timed exactly with the music - not scary dramatic music. No, it's the clear, sweet lovely voice of Cass Elliot singing one of her prettiest, most hope-filled songs. Editing wise, the timing is synchronized down to the second, with the lights, the music, and Jack spinning around with his gun drawn all at the same time. And the sheer look of confusion and terror on Matthew Fox's face just heightens the contrast with the sweetness of the song - the whole effect of what he's going through and hearing is totally surreal. I swear, no exaggeration, I felt every hair on my forearms stand up during that scene!
And it really is a "more bang for your buck" kind of moment with that song, because the contrasting scene of Kate crawling through the air vent - also dirty, scared, terrified of what she'll find - and then the music starts, and hilariously, Evangeline Lilly gets this awesome look on her face, from fear to, "What the hell? Is that Cass Elliot?"

Can't believe someone hasn't beaten me to it yet but, the Night Shifter episode of Supernatural. At the end Dean and Sam are trapped in the bank by the FBI and as they are escaping the first line from "Renegade" by Styx comes on "Oh Marna I'm in fear for my life from the long arm of the law". . . . . then it continues as they get into the *sigh, awesome* Impala, "Hangman is coming down from the gallows, and I don't have very long." Then Dean *sigh , so very cute* says "We are so screwed" and then the "Yeah!" of the song comes on with the next few lines and lastly the "This will be the end today of the wanted man". Just as they are driving away. Frickin' awesome and fits the episode so well. I was not spoilered for this part and when I heard the first line of "Renegade" I was just blown over! I love the song but hardly ever hear it and now ...yup big fan all around !!! Good job the Kripke guy! For a really good telling of this part of the ep go to the TWoP recap, it's acutally pretty good!

For a really good telling of this part of the ep go to the TWoP recap, it's acutally pretty good! I don't watch the show, but "Renegade" is the only Styx song that I like, so I always perk up when there's a mention of it. And I was just over at TWoP two minutes ago, and noticed that the title of the recap was "The jig is up, the noose is out, they've finally found me." And said to myself, "Hey! 'Renegade' by Styx!"
