I liked Ross too. I loved that they had the guy with the most education and the most pretentious career be the biggest fuck up that ever fucked up. The spray tan, the WHITE! teeth, the leather pants, kissing his cousin, the pivot couch, the fake English accent and the list goes on...the guy was a social moron, but he had his PhD, he was a professor and worked in a museum. I don't know. I thought his whole background paired with his personality was hilarious. Plus his luck with the ladies was nonexistant- he married a lesbian, said the wrong name at his 2nd wedding, and was drunk and markered up at his 3rd. Got the 3rd wife pregnant- after the divorce. He was the one with the best job- and the worst personal life. And on another tangent- who here remembers Fun Bobby?

I just watched the Fun Bobby episode today, since I have been recording all the reruns on the PVR. The downside to this is that it's giving me an excuse to not write my essay.

Another Ross moment that had me in stitches was when Rachel watched Ben and taught him a lot of practical jokes. Ross was pissed but at the end, he agreed to let Rachel watch Ben again. Ben "played" another practical joke on Ross, Ross chased him out of the apartment and up the stairs. Just as Rachel came flying out of the door, Ross' body fell down a flight of stairs and hit the floor. As Rachel is screaming, you see Ross and Ben come down, laughing. I'm not doing it justice, but it was really funny.

I think David Schwimmer did a good job with Ross. He does physical comedy really well. Some of my favorites are:
When Chandler goes to Joey's tailor. The tailor feels Chandler up when measuring the pant length. Joey tells Chandler that's how it's done, and asks Ross for confirmation. Ross says "Yes, yes it is...In PRISON!"
Before Ross and Rachel get together, they are doing laundry together at a laundramat. With Ross's encouragement, Rachel stands up to a rather obnoxious woman who keeps trying to take Rache's washing machine and then her cart. Rachel is so pleased that she stood her ground that she kisses Ross as a thank you. Ross gets so flustered by this that he walks face first into the open door of one of the dryers...and just drops to the ground. Makes me laugh everytime I see it.
DS was perfectly cast as Ross. I think he might be typecast because of it. I think he is smart to get into directing. I couldn't get into "Band of Brothers" because DS just seemed to be playing Ross, only worse. And quite frankly, I wouldn't want Ross Gellar as my commanding officer. That would scare me to death.

He was the worst thing in BoB. Thank God he was only in a couple of episodes.

The laundramat episode was a classic! To DS and JA's credit, not a lot of actors are able to sustain the unrequited love thing for so long, but they sold all of the stupid contrivances, like Barry inexplicably busting through Monica's apt as Ross is about to ask Rachel out.
Regarding Joey loves Rachel, I was thisclose to walking away from the show during that awful phase. I think it was Matt's fault, he was a little too earnest or something.
Also, one of my favorite things about Friends was the secondary characters. The writers got away from it towards the end, but nobody beats Ugly Naked Guy, Mr. Heckles, and Gunther! I love him and, apparently, so does Monica's mom. There were so many great Gunther moments.

Apparently JA was very possessive of DS, in a weird way. She treated Helen Baxendale (Emily) pretty badly on set, like she was actually jealous that she got to be with Ross. Weird.
I ran into Matthew Perry after Friends had been on the air about a month, and told him how much I liked it. He was so excited and immediately badgered me with questions: "What do you like about it?" "Do your friends watch it?" "Do they like it?" "Do you think we should do something different?" It was both sweet and actor-y neurotic but obviously he wanted the show to do well. Then about a month later it took off and became the monster success it did. I never saw him again but I'm sure after that he couldn't give a shit what anybody thought since he was on a hit show ;D

Aw, thanks for the Matthew anecdote. Chandler always had the best zingers.
I'm not really surprised about Aniston's possessiveness, I think it's fairly common for actors. Besides didn't she date all of the guys at one pt--either before or during the show? Or is that just a rumor?

I've read all of the girls were quite mean to Helen Baxendale. Actually, in the DVD interviews, she's almost too careful not to talk about them, she says the nicest things about the boys, but doesn't mention the girls. She doesn't sound too nice either.

Most of my favorites have been listed here - Pivot, the trivia game over the apartment (Monica: "I am SO GOOD at lightning rounds!"), Thanksgiving, Chandler in the box.
I also really enjoyed the episodes with Rachel's sisters, as played by Reese Witherspoon and Christina Applegate. The Christina Applegate sister was hilarious, calling Emma by the wrong name, piercing her ears, making fun of Ross right in front of him.
The Phoebe character really annoyed me. I know she was supposed to be flighty but sometimes they took it too far with her weirdness and everyone's acceptance of it. Like, the whole episode where she's with Mike and talking about the "pet" RAT that lives in her cabinet was just gross. And when they interviewed Joey for the soap opera magazine and she said her name was Phoebe, P as in Phoebe, H as in Hoebe, O and Oebe, etc.
