WHY? does it go from London straight to Vegas?? I'm annoyed Hawaii isn't there. I remember being really into that season and would've liked to have revisited to see if I still felt the same. Yeah, that season was airing while I was in college, I remember that being some of the only TV I watched back then. I'm pretty sure that season would be terrible to do a full rewatch on as an adult. I have seasons 1-20 on DVD, but I haven't revisited Hawaii in a long time. Almost half that cast was genuinely awful (Justin, Kaia, Terrycloth Matt). Amaya and Colin were annoying in their own ways and Ruthie was a hot mess for a lot of the season. Teck was entertaining, he was the only reliably likable one. There was a lot of appalling behavior in that season in terms of the way they treated Amaya, she was like the wounded gazelle and the pack of lions descended, and creepy ass Matt trying to use Ruthie's alcoholism as a way to turn her back from lesbianism OR when that didn't work, to hit on her twin sister as a proxy. His "nice guy" bullshit was mildly annoying to me as a teenager, I'm sure it would be unbearable to watch as an adult. I would love to see a "where are they now" on that cast. I want to know if Kaia is still as insufferable as she was then.

I noticed the same thing on my rewatch. Puck was constantly negging and pushing Cory and Rachel around - with the "chubs" nickname, telling them to shut up, telling them their thoughts/feelings were stupid, etc. It was awful. I kind of feel like rewatching now. Cory was in desperate need of attention and acceptance by the older kids, and Puck gave that to her. Rachel wanted to be rebellious and Puck gave that to her. I have a hard time getting over how Cory told Pedro that she really wanted to be closer to him, and Pedro basically pulled out what would become a reality show staple, "I didn't come here to make friends" (except spoken by a reality show hero rather than villain). I'm going by memory, but I thought it was cold as hell. Suddenly after he died, the whole rest of the cast (excluding Puck) acted as if Pedro was the best friend they ever had, and it always bothered me a bit because he didn't seem to let most of them very close.

I'm going by memory, but I thought it was cold as hell. Suddenly after he died, the whole rest of the cast (excluding Puck) acted as if Pedro was the best friend they ever had, and it always bothered me a bit because he didn't seem to let most of them very close. Since I just rewatched (and I'm eager to talk about RW, obviously), you're half right. And I remember having that same impression when I watched it before, but I've kind of changed my mind after watching it again. Pedro had two such moments, one was with Cory and the other one (the colder one) was with Rachel. The discussion with Cory was more about how she had invested SO much time and effort into Puck, which was true, and with Puck and Pedro on opposite sides, it automatically meant Pedro and Cory wouldn't be spending much time together since Pedro wouldn't be hanging with Puck. The moment with Rachel was a bit harsh, but also a bit deserved, because Rachel was rather self-involved and self-interested (like, assuming she should get the best hotel room on vacation because...?? because she was Rachel?). Rachel said she really tried with him and wanted to get to know him and he responded with "I didn't come here to connect with Rachel or learn about Rachel, I came here to connect with 6 other people...etc." The reason it felt a little deserved was because Rachel had said some pretty tone deaf and sometimes downright awful things to and about Pedro throughout the season, like "I shouldn't have to make HIM comfortable, he's the one with the disease, he should be making ME comfortable" and other gems like that. Also, she put even more time into her relationship with Puck than Cory did, and was right there laughing away at Puck's homophobic jokes, etc. At some point after Puck was gone, she decided to invest some time into knowing Pedro and even took him home with her (where she was CLEARLY jealous of how much her difficult mother ended up liking Pedro), and it was kinda like "well, now I've decided I want to be close to you, why aren't you dropping everything to revolve your life around me and our relationship?" He'd ragged on her for being a brat and she really was. Watching it now, far enough away from 24 to realize just how young that is, she showed a staggering lack of empathy for the enormous weight that Pedro was living with at such a young age. I would hope that if she'd known he had less than a year left to live, maybe she could've scrounged up some empathy, but I'm skeptical. She was always like "well, yeah he has AIDS, but we all have problems, like I didn't get into Princeton" and it was clear she couldn't see that some problems carry more weight than others. It's a bit similar to Becky from the current reunion, she couldn't see then and still can't see today that Kevin is "hung up" on race because it truly impacts his life in a way that her race has never affected hers.

Thank you for the memory jog. (It's been 28 years for me, LOL.) Pedro had a life's goal that he wanted to use The Real World to fulfill and it was a good goal. Nobody's perfect, but I do think it's rather harsh to tell someone, even someone who is self-involved, that you aren't interested in getting to know them. I don't remember him ever taking a big interest in getting to know the non-Puck roommates either, it all seemed kind of one-sided.

I think Pam and Judd were truly friends with Pedro. When Pedro got too sick for some of his education/speaking gigs, Judd stepped in for him. And Judd and Pam were with him in Miami when he died. They were living in California, so I assume they were really friends if they made that trip.
Cory seems like she was pretty supportive of Pedro in that she often supported his education efforts. Rachel seems like she peaced out once the show was over, and I don’t see much with Mohammed (but he didn’t seem all that involved with the housemates, anyway. His storylines were usually stand alones involving his girlfriend, not the cast members).
Pedro didn’t seem to suffer fools well, but maybe he was at a point in his life where he was going to call what he considered bullshit when he saw it. I remember the cast saying later that Pedro was much sicker than production let on (and looking at episodes now you can see how thin he got). I looked up the dates and they finished filming/left the house in June. Judd, Pam, Cory and Pedro met up in August, and everyone noted Pedro was in bad shape. He checked into the hospital later that month, then passed away in November.

Like kostgard said, I do think Pam, Judd, and Pedro all grew genuinely close. Cory was part of their little foursome to an extent, but it seems like it was a little bit of a chore sometimes to hang with Cory. She seemed even younger than her young age and she was so lost and searching for something, where Pedro, Judd, and Pam were all on a path of some sort already. Even Pam, who was so nice and diplomatic, made some comment like "when I talk to Cory, we talk a lot about how Cory is doing/feeling" and while she said it mildly, it seemed a bit pointed. And Cory regarded Pam as her life guru and seemed rather clueless about the fact that she was taking a lot from the relationship and not giving much back. Speaking for myself, if I knew I only had a short time to live, I probably wouldn't choose to get in TOO deep with an emotional vampire, even if they are super nice. And I don't think he was saying he didn't want to get to know Rachel, he was saying that it wasn't his one and only priority in life at that time. And Rachel thinking it should be was a symptom of her world view, where she was the center.

I do agree that Pam and Judd were very devoted friends to him, I just don't think it went in the other direction much. He knew he had limited time left and was very focused on that, so it makes sense that he didn't have a lot of extra time to be focused on other people, but I understand how the roommates felt who were disappointed that he kept them at a distance. Speaking of friendships, did Rachel and Jo keep up their friendship? They seem to have completely different lives now, but had fun together during that one particular moment in time.

I don't think so. I think their friendship was on the level of 'drunk girls meeting in the bathroom line at a bar,' if you know what I mean. Like, I'm cute and you're cute and these boys think we're cute so we're instant BFFs and we confide in each other and feel like soulmates for a minute, but we won't get together after this night (in this case, this experience) is over.

I just remembered how Dave Eggers auditioned for Real World SF. I don't think he would have been taken seriously as an author after that if he'd made it onto the show. Even Pam, who was so nice and diplomatic, made some comment like "when I talk to Cory, we talk a lot about how Cory is doing/feeling" and while she said it mildly, it seemed a bit pointed. Cory was a young 20 and Pam was an old 26. I remember Cory crying one day because she'd had a tough day at The Gap.

I probably really started watching LA show and then of course SF onwards ish I can’t find anyway of watching this reunion to be fair I haven’t tried too hard but I found this cute clip Judd and Pam 25 years on talk of Pedro and their lives together since. That was adorable! Thanks for finding and sharing that.
