This is kind of embarrassing. In the ska staple, "You're Wondering Now" there's a line Curtain has fallen, now you're on your own I won't return, forever you will wait that I swore was ' Britain has fallen,' or at least in the Specials version. I mean, it made sense--a lot of their songs ( pretty literally Going Home by Fun Boy Three) had allusions to the late 70s crumbling of empire. But no, I was wrong. That is all.

My bestie is SO bad at lyrics and it is one if the most delightfully hilarious things about her. Hers are usually not close and make much less sense than yours! Waterloo, by ABBA, was 'wannado' and there was something about tennis shoes in the middle of her version of Kokomo. She gets them so wrong that I have considered trying to turn her over for scientific (or psychological) study. Wouldn't change her for the world but ...how does her brain filter that way???

I think my favourite was way back in the seventies when I heard a friend at the disco singing “Rah, rah, mustard seed”. It was actually “Rah, rah, Rasputin “.

I just learned something, I too thought it was Britain that had fallen. Huh. I will have to tell my brother, see what he thinks they were saying.

I feel less alone—the original version is pretty clearly “curtain” but I still think it’s a toss up in the Specials’ cover. And there’s a recording on YouTube where Amy Winehouse sings with the Specials and it’s “curtain” there, too. ETA: full confession, I found out my mistake in the first place because I was trying to teach myself the song on my ukulele. And now I want to die of embarrassment.

No embarrassment needed, learning Specials songs on the ukulele is very cool! I'm partial to Ghost Town myself, but not sure how a ukelele would take to that. Keep practicing!

Paint it Black by the Rolling Stones Real lyric: "No more will my green seas go turn a deeper blue" I heard: "No more will ugly seagulls turn the people blue"
Our Lips Are Sealed by the Go-Gos I heard: "Long as you feel"
Heart of Rock 'n' Roll by Huey Lewis and the News Real lyric: "The old boy may be barely breathin'" I heard: "The oboe may be there to greet 'em"
Little Red Corvette - Prince I heard: "Send an S.O.S."

I like your lyrics better! And they make as much sense (or more) than the original lyrics.

Thanks. This is a misheard lyric I remember from going to singles bars in the 1970s. My friend and I smoked a doobie before we got there and then had a drink or two, so we were somewhat twisted. A guitarist was sitting on a stool and singing Neil Diamond hits. When he launched into "Solitary Man," I thought I heard this:
"I'll be what I am, Salivary glands"
My friend and I still sing it that way.
