I was re-reading some stuff and realized that The Slacker Hacker turned me on to FischerSpoonera couple years before they were being heard every-freakin'-where. I've also been hooked on Puffy Ami Yumi 1) since before they had a cartoon and 2) when they were still just "Puffy."
This, I deeply believe, makes me better than everyone.

Well, I won't say I DISCOVERED THEM!, but I was amused by all the "hot new band" press about Jimmy Eat World. I remember seeing them at Koo's Cafe when they toured with Christie Front Drive. It must have been 1995. Maybe 1994.

I called "Can't Get You Out of My Head" as Kylie Minogue's big comeback in June 2001. People laughed.
Ten months later, she was on SNL.

I remember watching Friday Night Videos when I was little (we didn't have MTV... sheltered life) and right after Poison's "Unskinney Bop" (oh, I loved me some Poison, even then) came Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." I stood in awe in front of the tv, wondering what the hell just happened. Even my un-cool small town Iowa self knew this was a watershed moment for popular music.
So I claim Kurt Cobain. Is that ok?

AHHH I Love Clap Your Hands. I had that album last April, and I've seen them 3 times since. Amazing. I remember talking about them and everyone was like "WHAT IS THAT NAME?".So yes, I discovered them. Right now I'm all over the Arctic Monkeys, We Are Scientists, Crystal Skulls, and Sun Kil Moon... On a side note, there are a lot of artists who i feel like i've known for forever and I feel like they're at least relatively received, but it amazes me how many people have never even HEARD OF: Elliott Smith, Sufjan Stevens, Bright Eyes, etc. Ugh, it hurts my brain.

You beat me to it, since I called it in December 2001 after staring in awe at my tv when the video was shown on Much Music (when Fuse was MMUSA and would show a lot of the MM stuff)

Fanatic, I was gonna claim Sufjan Stevens. Well, I still will, cause I bought his fabulous Illinoise album when it came out back in July, and now it's making most of the critics' 10-best-of-the-year lists, and it tops Amazon's best-of list. I feel vindicated. I LOVE Sufjan Stevens.
Also: Jump, Little Children. The Arcade Fire. My Morning Jacket. Definitely Nellie McKay.
Anybody heard of Vashti Bunyon?

Oooh, I was the first one in my school to discover the Pet Shop Boys, and U2 and REM.
I claim London File for the future.

Maybe not discovery (since, come on, the chances of me being the first one in my year to actually hear them are slim to nil), but I'm going to take a leap and go on record as the first one in my year at high school to declare himself a fan of The Beatles. I was the go-to person for answers about the music of the sixties - in fact, I once told our music teacher that John Lennon and Paul McCartney couldn't read sheet music when they wrote together. He didn't believe me. [/smug nerdiness] EDIT: Hah! My 100th post! It was either this thread or the Ann Coulter one - I think I made the right choice.
