Despite having lived in Portland, and hitting a lot of the concerts there, I didn't hear of the band Hockey until having moved back here. They live with a friend's sister.
Awesome band!

Hmm. I'm in PDX and haven't seen Hockey before. I'll keep an eye out.

Fleet Foxes. I just found them and they're greeeaaaat. I know they're not unknown or anything, but few enough people in my neck of the woods have heard of them that I'm sure I'll want to say "I was listening to them way back when" someday. They rock. Perfect blend of retro and modern style. It feels like they were cryogenically frozen in 1968, woken up circa '05 and told to make some records. I am in love with the song "Mykonos." OMG! I friggin love Fleet Foxes! I am a recent listener of theirs as well, and I just love their sound. Mykonos is my jam too, but I especially love "Blue Ridge Mountains"! The singer's voice is so haunting and the music itself is just awesome!

I've been listening to Ladyhawke. She's a New Zealand musician who totally channels 1980s synth pop and makes it sound new and wonderful. Great songwriter.

OK I know I saw NSYNC on one of those Korean MTV-type live shows (in Korea, most big stations have a music show where the artists/groups perform live on a stage and have like a weekly top 10 or 40 countdown). They were so awful-looking and such bad dancers compared to the perfectly synchronized Korean pop stars. This was way before they hit it big, way before even BSB had a following in the States.
My emo-lovin' self and high school friend thought Dashboard Confessional was "ours"--he clinched our hearts when he came outside of the Troubadour in Hollywood at 2pm to greet some fans and called my crocheted cell phone cover (when flip phones just came out!) a phone "mitten". He was even nice enough to talk to a friend of mine over the phone. Adorable.
Same friend and I listened to Jason Mraz before his first label record too.

I've been listening to Ladyhawke. She's a New Zealand musician who totally channels 1980s synth pop and makes it sound new and wonderful. Great songwriter. I know about Ladyhawke. I like her song Paris Is Burning. You might want to check out Bachelorette, another NZ techno/synth artist. A bit more quirky than Ladyhawke, but really interesting and talented. I Want To Be Your Girlfriend is a good introductory song. I claim dibs on a ton of NZ/Wellington bands. I was following Flight of the Conchords years before they did their tv show, and through them I found out about a ton of NZ bands that are now getting a bit bigger as other more recent fans of FotC pick up on them: Age Pryor, The Phoenix Foundation, The Black Seeds, Fat Freddy's Drop, Adi Dick, etc. The Black Seeds and Fat Freddy's Drop have gotten popular here in Europe, in terms of a following, even if not in terms of top 40 radio play. They play to sold out shows when they tour. The Phoenix Foundation is supposedly moving to the UK next year, and they've been gradually getting more exposure and positive reviews, so I hope they get some real success. They're really good, great live, and really nice guys on top of it all.

My newest find is Meredith Godreau, AKA Gregory and the Hawk, a really talented singer/songwriter from NY who is awesome. I think she's recently gotten more publicity thanks to being linked to The Scene Aesthetic. I really, really love her song, "Boats and Birds."

Travelling back in time to the glorious '80s, I went to a Loverboy concert with the opening act of some newcomer named Bryan Adams.
The only high school dance I ever went to had a band called Sheriff, they of the one-hit-wonder super ballad, "When I'm With You" that was played to death on every radio station and at every wedding. Interestingly, the song was a hit in Canada in the early 80s and somehow made a resurgence and became a huge hit in the U.S. in 1989.

I didn't know that song had a resurgence in 1989. I definitely remember that song from junior high, which would have been 1982-1983.
