Nope. Seattle.
Ahh, Sufjan. I'm going to be honest, I got the record a month before it came out (let's just say I have skills) and I bawled my eyes out the first time I heard it. It's honest to god the beautiful thing I've ever heard. Go home and put on "The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades is Out to Get Us!" and tell me it's not just awe inspiring. (I also bought it on vinyl and have it framed on my wall)
Whew, sorry I get a little out of hand.
Let's see...right now I'm listening to: The Czars Jenny Lewis (mmm...) Islands The new Belle & Sebastian

Fleet Foxes. I just found them and they're greeeaaaat. I know they're not unknown or anything, but few enough people in my neck of the woods have heard of them that I'm sure I'll want to say "I was listening to them way back when" someday. They rock. Perfect blend of retro and modern style. It feels like they were cryogenically frozen in 1968, woken up circa '05 and told to make some records. I am in love with the song "Mykonos."

Thank goodness for you, Smilla. All day I've been singing this in my head, totally drawing a blank on the group or the song. Great harmonies.

I listened to Liz Phair long before she hit the radio and become mainstream as the years rolled along.
I remember when Kylie Minogue's rendition of "The Loco-motion" and her other popular song "It's No Secret" back in the late 80s.

Another early Kylie jam: "I Should Be So Lucky."

There was a kid at my middle school who had a sibling or a cousin in college in Georgia. This kid brought a cassette to a school dance and gave it to the DJ (a very talented kid a year ahead of me) to play for us. It was the weirdest, craziest, BEST thing we'd heard in a long time (we were in the throes of discomania at the time) and that song became a staple of every school dance all the way into high school.
The song? "Rock Lobster" by the B-52s. The cassette was recorded off a soundboard at a UGA street party in 1977 (I think), and the studio version was released as a single in 1978, with the B52s' first album coming out in '79. Believe me, we hounded the nice folks at Waterloo Records for a couple of years until they had something to sell us from the B52s!

Six years ago, the Strokes had a concert at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden. They had not one, but two opening acts: Regina Spektor and Kings of Leon. Both were very good, but I became a megafan of KoL after their performance and I couldn't understand why they weren't doing well stateside while they became headliners internationally. Now they are.
Keep it up, Followill Boys! I saw you then and I'll see you on Saturday at the Meadowlands!

A friend of mine used to have a gigantic 8-track mixer/reel-to-reel contraption in his basement. One day he showed up at my studio with a tape that had been recorded in his basement on this thing, and asked my opinion. It was a very lo-fi guitar/drum/vocal duo, that I absolutely did not get at all. I pronounced it "blusey White Stripes hero worship" or something equally curmudgeonly. As a bass player, I am required to hate all bands with no bass player.
Yup, if I was the head of a record company A&R department, I would have passed on the Black Keys.
Thank God my opinion meant very little to them. They are very nice guys. I worked on a bunch of stuff with Pat's uncle Ralph, and tried to help Dan set up his even gianter 8-track machine when he built his home studio in his house a few blocks from my house. I always enjoy seeing the local kids make it big.

I'm claiming Empires. They're a local Chicago band with what seems like 5000 fans. They are awesome. Great drums + guitar and the singer's voice is fantastic. Their album is available for free download at their website. Lately, I seem to be turning into one of those people who hates to share "their band" but these guys deserve some appreciation.

I've been following The Gossip since 2001. I saw them at a small club in Seattle opening for another KRS band. I can't believe how much they've blown up, especially in the UK. Since then, I've dragged everybody I know to their live shows. I still suggest people check them out coz Beth Ditto is amazing onstage.
ETA - Drive-By Truckers. They may not be hugely mainstream but I first saw them at the Star Bar in Atlanta and we went mainly because they have a great band name. They're fantastic live also.
