I was just listening to a cd while on this board and actually had to shut the computer while listening to a song because it was so beautiful. Then I saw that there was no thread for great songs- so here goes. The song was Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley. Some others I would list:
Stand By Me by Ben E. King Gloomy Sunday by Billie Holiday Amazing Grace by Ani Difranco Behind The Wall by Tracy Chapman

God, I hope this thread gets going, it gives me so many ideas of great songs to listen to.
Some of my favorite are: Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday. One of the saddest songs ever recorded, but also one of the most beautiful. I could listen to it endlessly. Lean On Me by the Temptations. Yeah, it's sort of cheesy, but it is such a nice song There are a couple by Fiona Apple I really love, Pale September, I Know, Get Gone, Paper Bag to name a few. For me, it's her lyrics, which are very well spoken and atypical. She is great with words, and it shows. Creep by Radiohead is a song I won't get tired of any time soon. There are a million for me, I just tend to get so in love with songs and play them over and over. Love this thread!

Let it Be-- The Beatles--and Joan Baez does the best cover of this EVER! I'll add more later.

Speaking of The Beatles "I Saw Her Standing There" is a damn great song. Actually, most Beatles songs fall into this category.

I have to second the love for Hallelujah. That song just about puts me in a trance. Same for At Last by Etta James. The perfect confluence of song and artist.
I also love Boston and St. Johns (so poignant for anyone whose SO has to be away a lot) and I'm a Rover (so FUN!) by Great Big Sea.
I'm partial to a lot of Led Zeppelin stuff, especially When the Levee Breaks, The Ocean, and Kashmir.

I *heart* U2. A majority of their 80s catalog would go in this thread. But the short list includes New Year's Day, Sunday Bloody Sunday, I've Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Where the Streets Have No Name. From their current albums would be Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own and Vertigo ("they know they can't dance but at least they know" is one of my favorite lyrics.)
I'm currently digging the Cure. So entire Wish album goes here (with the exception of Friday, I'm in Love.)
Liz Phair's Flower, Divorce Song, and 6'1 cover sexuality, heartbreak, and female-male relationships in a non-cliched way. On the flipside, there's also Radiohead's Talk Show Host and Paranoid Android.
Then there's Ben Folds Five's Brick and Army. I can't forget Tori Amos' Spark or Playboy Mommy.
I have to second Ani Difranco and add In and Out and Both Hands.

I have loved Billy Joe Shaver's Live Forever but then heard a live version in which he says that he and his son wrote the song together before his son died. And? The live version was recorded on that next Father's Day. Goosebumps.

Dwanollah, what about Save a Prayer by Duran Duran?
"Some people call it a one night stand but we can call it paradise...."
