One song that I've come to really appreciate is 'Nautical Disaster' by The Tragically Hip. It never used to be a big favourite of mine, but I have an acquaintance who has a serious hard on for The Hip. She once spent about half an hour explaining to me why it's a great song, and I have to say that I agree with her. It has no chorus, it has no bridge, but it just grabs your attention and at every Hip concert I have been to (including concerts in countries where English is not the primary language spoken) the audience has known all the words. And I find the line "those left in the water were kicked off our pant legs" to be one of the most chilling lyrics I've ever heard in a pop song.
I also love 'Mary Jane' by Alanis Morrisette. I think that it's just a painful, honest song, and I always forget that she can SING, and this is probably the best song for showcasing that.
And Tom Jones's version of 'Detroit City' is brilliant.

Rock on, Topher. That is my most listened to CD in the last couple of years.
And now for something completely different:
Ripple by the Grateful Dead
Franklin's Tower by the Grateful Dead
Sugaree by the Grateful Dead
Althea by the Grateful Dead
#41 by the Dave Matthews Band
Say Goodbye by the DMB
All Along the Watchtower (DMB version)
Crush by the DMB
Pig by the DMB
I could go on and on. For the record, I like TONS of different artists, but I am first and foremost one of Jerry's Kids and a Davehead. Their live stuff is phenomenal.

Don't Dream It's Over--Crowded House I listened to this so obsessively in high school I think I melted the grooves on my 45. Aaaanyway, here's just a few off my all-star, all-time list: Summertime by Janis Joplin Fields of Joy by Lenny Kravitz Life on Mars by David Bowie Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix (duh) Helplessly Hoping by CSN&Y With These Hands by Tom Jones

One - U2. Just a beautiful, timeless song.
Every Breath You Take - The Police. Yes, its creepy, but it's such a perfectly crafted song.
Don't Think Twice - Bob Dylan. My favorite of his because the emotions are so descriptive and universal.
When the Levee Breaks - Led Zeppelin. Wonderful blues.
Losing My Religion - REM. I don't what made me think of this song as I'm not a big REM fan, but this one is just remarkable. One of the best songs of the 90s.

Wow, I didn't know people outside of Norway had heard about her. Cool! Speaking of Ane Brun, her "Wooden Body" is one of my great songs. Others include Radiohead's Creep, High and Dry, Exit Music (For a Film), Street Spirit (Fade Out), and No Surprises. Counting Crows' Mr.Jones, Goodnight Elizabeth, and Omaha. Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah, Garbage's Only Happy When It Rains, Skunk Anansie's Hedonism, Green Day's American Idiot and When September Ends, Eminem's Stan. There are many more, but I have to stop not to spend the rest of the weekend on this.

I bought a cassette of the "What's the Frequency Kenneth" single the other day at a rummage sale, and I've played it non-stop at full blast for days in my car. God DAMN is that a good song! Best $.53 I ever spent.
