Logistics-wise, how do you choose ceremony music? We only have two people in our wedding party, so I need something really short for my Maid of Honor to walk down the aisle to, and then I need something relatively short for myself as well, since I'm just crossing a lawn, not entering a cathedral. I had merged a lot of different songs from original soundtrack scores. A couple ideas for pretty, yet shorter songs could be Nimrod (strange name I know), otherwise known as Volume 22 Strings -- I have the MP3 if you need it. But one song was from Badly Drawn Boy called "The Shining" had this beautiful intro. And I think it's only 1.5 mins long. But the entire song is 5.21 minutes. It has pretty cellos, and a deep, bittersweet trumpet that is just lovely. If you're interested, I can send you MP3s of both. They may not be exactly what you have in mind, but something to consider.

Are you hiring musicians or playing pre-recorded music? If you're hiring, they should be able to help you. My mom plays for weddings, and she has a plethora of choices for people. She can shorten or lengthen pieces depending on the size of the wedding party.

I went to a wedding where the couple danced to an amazing version of Keane's "Somewhere Only We Know"... *sigh*

At my brother's wedding us bridal party members entered the reception to the theme from Indiana Jones. Needless to say, my brother was in charge of the music.

We're doing live music for the ceremony and cocktail hour, and then DJ for the reception. What the live musicians will be is the current conundrum. Since this is a outdoor wedding with 50-60 people, I'm deciding between a violin/guitar duo, a violin/piano duo, and a violin/viola/cello trio (and if anyone has any other combination ideas, please feel free to mention them. I just don't like flutes or harps.).
I definitely want them to play more upbeat, jazzy stuff at cocktail hour, but I'm having a very hard time deciding on ceremony music. Mom keeps pushing for Canon in D or Air on the G String, but I hate both of them since they're so overused. So far I've decided I like "Sheep May Safely Graze" and "Butterfly Waltz" but the whole thing is just sort of making my head hurt.

When my husband's college roommate was (very briefly) engaged to a pole dancer, Mr. d suggested "Air on the G String" for the ceremony. They did not get the joke.
One of my friends selected her music from the lesser-known music at the most recent British royal weddings (at that time, Diana's and Fergie's)--Handel's "Water Music", some Elgar, and an instrumental arrangement of Mozart's "Laudate Dominum". Some of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" might be appropriate and less familiar as well.

As I said in my earlier post, if they've done weddings before, they will have options for you, although if you have certain music you definitely want, they'd play that (just give them time to learn it in case they don't already know it). My mom (who mostly does church weddings) either has a short session with the bride & groom or loans them a tape with all of the music options, e.g., Processionals XXXX, offertory YYYY, Recessional music ZZZZZ. I'm a big fan of Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring.

I'm nowhere near getting married, but I just realized I'd love to walk into the reception to one of my favorite songs... "Space Oddity." That would be HILARIOUS and AWESOME. Like, after the beginning when Bowie does the countdown - I would also require lots of special effects to go along with it. OR, "Circle of Life." HAH. Or, a NY Yankees theme: walk in to "Enter Sandman," end the night with "New York, New York!" As for first dance, maybe "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys, but I get teary eyed just thinking about it. I'd be a mess in real life. Maybe "Under My Skin" by Frank Sinatra. I probably wouldn't use it, but "So Are You To Me" by Eastmountainsouth would be good too. Also gonna play a shitload of that delicious 90s club music at my wedding. ...obviously, I've been reading this thread and thinking about it way too much.

I don't really care for the classical bridal procession music and wanted something different so I walked to Vivaldi's Guitar Concerto in D, 2nd Mvt., its such a beautiful piece.

If I ever get married, I think I would love to walk down the aisle to "Avril 14th" by Aphex Twin. I've been in love with this song ever since I heard it on the Marie Antoinette soundtrack. It's just such a beautifully stripped down piano solo.
