"Sweet Home Alabama" was pretty much ruined for me by that stupid movie of the same name.

The Donna Summer song "She works hard for the money" was ruined by Zellers (a crappy Canadian department store that makes Wal-Mart look like Saks Fifth Avenue) using it as the theme song in their dumb commercials for about 10 years. They changed the lyrics to incorperate their slogan "The lowest price is the law" but kept the same music. As a result I heard, "You work hard for your money, and the lowest price is the lawww!" about fifty million times as a kid/pre-teen. It was only a few years ago that I realized it is a real song, and actually it has a pretty cool message. But it is totally ruined for me thanks to Zellers.

I seriously doubt that anyone remembers this, but stupid Dr. Pepper had to go ruin a Thompson Twins song for me ("Doctor, doctor...can't you hear I'm calling, calling...).

Sleepy, I remember that song well. Stupid Dr. Pepper. Stupid bands selling their music to commercials. Whatever happened to making up cute little jingles - like "have you had your sprinkle todaaaay" or "have you driven a ford late-ly" - now they have to bastardize my childhood music.

It's usually not up to the bands whether or not their songs get sold. Blame the greedy-ass record labels and whoever owns their songs (again, not always the artists themselves).

"I'm A Believer" by the Monkees was ruined for me by the film "The Believer." Now whenever I hear that bouncy chorus, I keep getting inappropriate images in my head of Angry Skinhead Ryan Gosling giving the Nazi salute and denying the Holocaust. I know it's horrible. I can't help it.

On the other hand, I used to hate "Take My Breath Away" to begin with....then I heard her version and I started to appreciate the orginal a whole lot more Topic? "These Boots Are Made For Walkin' " Thanks a lot, Jessica, you miserable wench!

Some pizza company (whose name I am deliberately choosing to suppress, because I don't want the ad to do its work) has totally ruined "We Got the Beat" by The Go-Go's. I care not that kids today probably have no idea who Belinda Carlisle is, let alone The Go-Go's. I have a soft spot for early-eighties vaguely post-punk synth pop and all-girl groups. I liked that song. I liked that band.
I did NOT like hearing it transformed into "We Got the Meat" to hawk pizza, and if I ever run across the smug, thirty-something, self-consciously-and-ironically-retro junior ad exec whose mission it seems to be to ruin all my childhood/early adolescent favourites, I will locate my 78rpm edition of "Beauty and the Beat" and personally insert it somewhere in his body, while chanting "I curse you and everything you stand for." Yes I will.

There's an ad using "Head Over Heels", also - I forget what it's for. But I think they're only using the instrumental part, at least.
