Been catching up on this thread a little bit, and I must say that I LOVE TALK TALK!!!!! Funny thing was that, back in the 80's, none of my friends would admit to liking them (most of the people at my high school would only admit to liking Pat Benetar and Def Leppard) but every time I bought that cassette tape, it would get stolen. The same thing was true of the Fixx's Shuttered Room tape.
Another band that I really loved and couldn't figure out why they weren't bigger was Heaven 17. Let Me Go is still one of my very favorite songs ever. But the band that I still can't live without listening to is Soft Cell.

When I heard about the Ian Curtis biopic Control I dug out my Joy Division CDs. Amazing stuff, still. And then I got a little emotional thinking about Ian.

The boyfriend and I suffered our way through the TeenChoice Awards last week, and as we were watching the little girls in the crowd getting all excited over Hannah Montana, I couldn't help but feel sorry for them, because when I was their age, I was listening to Blondie. I was also listening to the BeeGees, but I really liked Blondie. <snip> I can't remember if I mentioned Ultravox previously in this thread, but their Vienna album remains a favorite. They were excellent at crafting great atmosphere throughout the songs. Are you my long-lost conjoined twin? I had posters of Debbie Harry all over my bedroom wall when I was a kid—but still listened to my Saturday Night Fever record endlessly (and I also loved the Village People. How come the Indian didn't love me back?!). She remains my all-time idol, and at 60+, the woman is as effortlessly fierce as ever. LOVE. HER. Ultravox wasn't a huge success in the US like they were in the UK, but I couldn't get enough of Vienna, a wonderful, beautiful record and the title track remains one of my most favorite songs ever. Anyone else a fan of Pete Shelley? Telephone Operator and Homosapien were great singles--I add one or the other to nearly every mix CD I make. One of my favorite new wave concert memories: Way back in 1980, my mom dropped a friend and me off at a venue for a Devo concert. She saw what everyone was wearing and said, "What kind of crazy group is this where people are wearing flower pots on their heads? Don't you dare come home with one of them!" The concert opened with a Devo video—which I thought was the the greatest thing I'd ever seen since I had never seen a music video before. I didn't buy a flower pot hat, but I did buy a t-shirt that I regret now ever throwing away. Good times. MY GOD. I AM SO OLD.

LittleEdieBeal, considering our fondness for Bret avatars, Blondie and Ultravox, I suspect we may be related at least, although I was sadly a couple years too young to be dropped off at Devo concerts in 1980. My boyfriend, however, was old enough to see Devo at that point, and he recently bought a DVD of their concert in San Francisco from that time period. The quality isn't great, but it's still wonderful to watch and we watch it regularly. And thanks for reminding me about Pete Shelley!

Not only is Dave Gahan releasing his second solo album in October, Sirius Satellite said that Dave's been dropping hints about doing a small tour to support the album. I will DIE if he does. Depeche Mode is my number one live band. *squee*

How does his new album sound? I enjoyed Paper Monsters, but I think I was also expecting a Depeche Mode album, which it obviously wasn't. I haven't listened to it in a while ('Bitter Apple' excepted---that's a great track). I was kind of miffed he didn't come to FL on tour, because I heard he played DM songs in his set. I'm especially interested in hearing his solo stuff since I've been in the middle of writing my chapter on Depeche Mode and am finding all these old quotes about how he'd like to be a song writer but doesn't consider himself any good.
Also, isn't it ironic that the member of DM who doesn't write songs has released two solo efforts of his own work, and the main songwriter of the band has released two solo albums of nothing but covers? Heh.

hee! That *is* funny.
Well, Dave wrote a few songs on Playing the Angel that were really fantastic. I haven't heard the new album yet (releases in Oct) but the first single "Kingdom" has been on Sirius Satellite for a few weeks now and getting a bit of play. It sounds fantastic and you can hear it on Dave's myspace page.

In other Dave Gahan news, here's a sample of a B side from his new album called Tomorrow. I can't wait for this album. I know this is a completely different band, but you reminded me of the Scottish version of The Silencers who were the successors of a great post-punk/new wave band called Fingerprintz. They're long forgotten but so great. I'm still trying to get my fingers on a digital copy of Beat Noir. I just realized the new Duran Duran single is up on iTunes. Any thoughts?

Come meet Dave at Best Buy (529 5th Ave) as he will be signing copies of his new CD "Hourglass", starting at 6pm. Purchase "Hourglass" at this Best Buy location and receive a wristband (while supplies last) that will ensure your chance to meet Dave. Dave Gahan - Live from Soho (New York City)! Apple Store Performance Tuesday, October 23rd! Dave will be performing songs from his new album "Hourglass" at the Apple Store in Soho, located at 103 Prince Street in New York on Tuesday, October 23rd at 8 PM. Fans will be admitted on a first come, first served basis so get there early to guarantee your admission. This show will be recorded and sold exclusively at iTunes at a later date!"
I really want to go! Has anyone been to any of these things (the in-store signing, I mean)? I wish I could go to the performance but I have class till 8 and would never get there in time that day. The other day is doable, though.
How much time is good to allot if he starts signing CDs at 6pm? Does that mean the line will have formed hours beforehand?
Any Greecies planning on going?
