A cover band that rocks my socks is 'Me First and the Gimme Gimmes'; they do punk covers of songs from all genres. Their albums are divided along themes - eg one of their CD's is a cover of show tunes like 'Somewhere over the rainbow', 'Rainbow connection' and the theme from the 'Rocky Horror Picture Show'. Hey, I came here to say that I really love their cover of Lionel Richie's Hello . It's set to a fan vid of some sorts, but you can listen to it here. They also do covers of Delta Dawn, Goodbye Earl, I Believe I Can Fly and many others. This one's fun: Me First And The Gimme Gimmes Ruin Jonny's Bar Mitzvah

My favorite is the acoustic version of "Umbrella" by...some chick who has a pretty voice that isn't as nasal as Rhianna's.
I also really love Rufus Wainwright's cover of "Hallelujah."

Best Cover Of All Time By Someone You've Heard Of: Richie Haven's version of "Here Comes the Sun" at Woodstock. (No, I wasn't there.)
Best Cover Of All Time By Someone You've Never Heard Of: I was in a packed pub in Islington the summer of 1977, just up the road from the youth hostel I was staying in. The Mike Sahn Band was playing. They launched into a reggae version of "Knocking On Heaven's Door" which completely blew me away and stuck with me for the last 30 years.

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes are so much fun! I love their version of "Science Fiction Double Feature."
My current favorite covers are:
"Talking Old Soldier" - Bettye LaVette "Lonesome Town" - Richard Hawley "Your Cheatin' Heart" - The The "What Have You Done For Me Lately" - Sharon Jones "Oh My God" - Mark Ronson w/ Lily Allen "Hollywood Swingin' " - Jamiroquai And that Dwight Yoakam album where he covers Buck Owens? Yeah, pretty much the whole damned thing.
Edited because "Lonesome Town" and "Are You Lonesome Tonight?" are not the same song...I clearly need more sleep or more booze.

I adore the Watson Twins, and their amazing cover of Spoon's I Summon You only quadruples the love.

I think my absolute favourite is Sarah Slean covering Radiohead's "Climbing Up the Walls." It's one of the hidden tracks from her first EP from 1997, and it is amazing.
