I also was scandalized by the sight of peeing Huey Lewis in Short Cuts! I was a fan; the news about him and the fan mail is rather heartwarming. "Tenderness" by General Public is another fave of mine that I just thought of. Good good song.

I listened to a lot of rap in the 80s - Run DMC was big when I was either a Junior or Senior in HS, coming out with Rock Box. "Roxanne, Roxanne" was great, although I was never a fan of those revenge songs that came out after. I remember "Fly Girl" (My name is Boogie Night and yes, I'm a Capricorn. I like the fly girls that know that they're on).
I also loved that song that went "Set it off to the left y'all, set it off to the right, y'all, just set it off. Set it off" although I can't remember who sang it. Then there was Slick Rick with La Di Da Di (I believe that was the 80s). The Timex Social Club had a huge hit with "Rumors." Whodini had "Five Minutes of Funk" (it ain't no junk).

People, get digital cable so you can watch VH1 classics and The Tube. All great 80 videos, all the time.
I hate when people say the 80s produced crap music. I have to reply U2, REM and The Cure.

Thanks for making me search and find the Bananarama Venus video.
We used Just like Heaven to introduce the wedding party at our reception.

I checked a few weeks ago to see if I had VH1 Classics and my stupid sexy cable company currently isn't offering it.
But thank goodness for YouTube. Ahhh, remember the days when videos weren't just people dancing around, showing off their mystic-tanned bodies?

Soooo jealous. We didn't budget for digital cable. I had to negotiate just for the 70 channels we have. One of the best songs of the 80s (sometimes I think it's one of the best songs ever): Your body gets much closer ... I fumble for the clock ... alarmed by the seduction

Okay, first I have to say how awesome the Richard Marx concert story was. That is priceless. Second, I AM the '80s. You guys just don't understand. The only '80s I don't like, at least a little, is just what I don't like today: reggae and jazz (and new age, but who likes new age?). (small voice) I adore New Age. (/sv) Does anyone remember a station called The Box? It may have been more of a 90s thing, but I believe it was around in the late 80s. Music television YOU control. Heh. Hmm...I'm a freestyle nut. Lisa Lisa, Noel, the Jets...keep it coming!

Hmm...I'm a freestyle nut. Lisa Lisa, Noel, the Jets...keep it coming! This could go in the Something I Just Learned thread - but I never knew that this type of music was called freestyle until a couple of weeks ago. I loved Lisa Lisa, Stevie B, Expose, etc. I could never exactly figure out what genre it was supposed to be, until I started hunting around on the internet awhile back. I have the most eclectic taste in music and I think it is due in part to the era in which I grew up. Top 40/Pop Music was still going strong, Rap/Hip-hop was just becoming known in the mainstream, New Wave was out in force, Rock/Glam Rock was big.. I loved it all and soaked it all up.
