I did a double take when I saw a "Best of" album by Kajagoogoo.
I mean, in the US, they had one hit. How can they even sell a "Best of" album here without turning it into a "10 Remixes of 'Too Shy'" album?

Whew! Smells like Aqua Net in here! Naw, it smells like Aussie Scrunch spray. It's hard for me to write objectively about the decade since it was the music I listened to as I came of age. I still love Duran Duran, Howard Jones, and Pet Shop Boys. Wham! hasn't aged all that well.

Ah, Wham!
Now I'm thinking of the song "Young Guns" which was featured in Sixteen Candles.

Whew! Smells like Aqua Net in here! Naw, it smells like Aussie Scrunch spray. I positively reeked of that stuff for several years. I have more of a fascination with really early 80s music, because I was just old enough then to listen to the radio and be aware of pop culture. The late 80s, I can take or leave a lot of it.

And hey! Kajagoo's self-title song was used in the opening credits of Sixteen Candles! See? Two songs that people would know. (Meanwhile I still have my vinyl copy of their album.) I've been listening to Thomas Dolby's album The Flat Earth a lot the past few months. In the US, at least, I think Hyperactive was the big hit from that album, but I originally got it for the song Dissidents. I still love that song and the whole album. I Scare Myself is my current fave, and I find myself singing it at random times -- like when I woke up with it in my head this morning.

I recently made a mix of 80s college/alternative rock. I dig it a lot and use it for workouts sometimes. It includes:
Echo & the Bunnymen, "Lips Like Sugar" and "The Killing Moon" Jesus and Mary Chain, "Just Like Honey" Jane's Addiction, "Jane Says" The Smiths, "How Soon Is Now?" Dead Kennedys, "Holiday In Cambodia" The Clash, "Janie Jones" Beastie Boys, "Hey Ladies" New Order, "Blue Monday" Oingo Boingo, "Dead Man's Party" Siouxsie and the Banshees, "Cities In Dust" Sisters of Mercy, "This Corrosion"
I wasn't in college until the mid 90s and didn't really "discover" these bands until then. But 80s alternative is bar none.

Even though she's a mess now, I will always have a soft spot for Paula Abdul because "Forever Your Girl" was the first album I ever bought. Straight up, baby!
