Oh! How could I forget Big Country??? I still listen to them all the time. eta: And another one of THE great 80s songs: "Whisper to a Scream" by Icicle Works. Holy crap, get outta my head!! The 80s college boyfriend I mentioned before? When it became common knowledge that he was interested in me, my two friends and I danced around her dorm room to "Big Country" to celebrate! AND, when he and I started dating - our song? "Whisper to a Scream"! This is freaky in a good way! Wow, I didn't even know anyone in the 80s who liked that song besides me! I love it! Great minds think alike, dontcha know! This thread has me reminiscing in a big way. Remember Crowded House's "Don't Dream, it's Over?" I thought that was the most lovely song EVAH when it came out. I had the 45...the 45!!!Oh what else...Culture Club? REO Speedwagon? Loverboy? Everytime I hear Loverboy, to this day, I want to go swimming, because I used to play it on my mahoosive boombox in the summers, and it just makes me think of sunshine and flipflops and cold cans of Country Time Lemonade. Time for a TC here: I actually went and ordered Icicle Works and the Plimsouls off Amazon this afternoon.

"Whisper To A Scream" is the best one-hit wonder EVER. EVER!! And I think Crowded House are/were a great band... Edited because I remembered that song's actually called "Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream)", isn't it?

I'll find out for sure (fer sure) now when it arrives in the mail! ;D Either Whisper to a Scream (Birds Fly), or vice versa--regardless, my fat butt will be bouncing along to it on New Year's Eve, with any luck.

I *did* manage to get a DJ to play that once in a club, and I have never danced so enthusiastically in my life, I'm sure.

That song sure takes me back to dancing at all-ages clubs when I was a teen. That and "How Soon is Now?" (yea, some dancing song, but still) and Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me Round" and one-hit wonders like T'Pau and Scritti Politti and (gulp) Billy Vera and the Beaters and the inevitable "Mony, Mony" (not that Billy Idol was a one-hit wonder, but just that that song was always played)...

Jesus! See, this is what happens when you're young and vital during the 80s and now I'm senile! How could I forget "Talk of the Town", "Kid", and "Back on the Chain Gang" by The Pretenders? I saw the Pretenders recently when they opened for the Who -- despite Pete's problems I love the music -- but I was equally psyched to see the Pretenders. Chrissie sounded fantastic -- just as good as ever and just as good as on record. She was very cheeky and playful in between and during songs. I smiled through the whole set as I sang along. Seeing Chrissie live and in action is such a refreshing contrast to the heavily protooled crap out there. Anyway -- keeping this about the 80s. The set was pretty much a subset of their greatest hits, including "Brass in Pocket", which my sibs and I used to love on early MTV, especially when the guys pointed to the word "Special" on the menus.

I remember watching MTV the day it aired. "Video Killed the Radio Star" was the first video played followed by Pat Benetar's "We Belong." I never liked that song though. Scritti Politti! How about a little 80s soul: Roger's "I Want to Be Your Man" and " or Levert's "Casanova?" "Oh Sheila" by Ready for the World? "Mr. Telephone Man," "Cool It Now" by New Edition. Any songs by NKOTB, Tiffany, or Debbie Gibson. . . they were more late 80s. Devo's "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" or "Whip It" a-ha's "Take On Me" Another one of my very fave, cheesy, yet sexy songs of the 80s was Sheena Easton's "Strut." I think I'm going to be living in this thread, thankyouverymuch. ;D

Robert Palmer was THE SEX.
He may very well have kickstarted puberty for me.

My mom didn't listen to "devil's music," but there was one video on MTV that put pop radio on the map for me when I was a wee, fae thing: "Need You Tonight" by INXS. That was the first song I liked despite the wounds to my immortal soul. It was all downhill from there!

That song has been on every party mix I've put together in, like, the last DECADE! So good. So bad. So goodly badly good.
