I have more of a fascination with really early 80s music, because I was just old enough then to listen to the radio and be aware of pop culture. If you were to change the bolded words to "late 80s music", that would fit me to a "T". I was a devotee of Casey Kasem's Top 40 countdown, and that was the bulk of what I listened to. I don't actually remember the early 80s stuff, but after litsening to it years later, I can't get into it.

SQUEEEE!!!! It's a date - you, me, and the original "Forever Young" album! I can't even think about the song "Summer in Berlin" without remembering my first love in college! When I was in the process of trying to get over him, I used to absolutely torture myself listening to that and "Somebody" by Depeche Mode!

I could always work myself into a maudlin and self-pitying state while listening to "Somebody." It was a sure cue for floodworks. How many of us experienced "Forever Young"-themed dances in high school?

Of course, to clarify - I'm talking about the slow version of "Forever Young", not the later dance version. Funny how just a change in tempo makes it a completely different song, because the slow version made me immediately think, "Woah - teen suicide". The fast version, though, I'd always think, "Yeah, wouldn't it be fun to always be young and out having fun all the time?"

My senior year banquet (no prom for us!) theme was "Forever Young" but it was the crappy Rod Stewart song. Boooooo!

Ooh! Ooh! Frankie Goes to Hollywood! I effing love that band! Spandau Ballet, Heaven 17, Human League, oh so many great bands.
Of course, I also went through a (brief) phase of Van Halen, Aldo Nova, Billy Squier, Night Ranger, .38 Special, Asia, and (she says shamefacedly) Ratt. Shut -up! I'm sorry, early Van Halen was awesome (of course, then we are going back to the 70s, too).
I also liked Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam back then. So there.

How could I forget Big Country??? I still listen to them all the time. eta: And another one of THE great 80s songs: "Whisper to a Scream" by Icicle Works.

Ah, yes.
"Brass in Pocket" by The Pretenders (one of my fave songs ever!)
"Puttin' on the Ritz" by Taco (need to get out my top hat, tails, and cane)
"Luka" by Suzanne Vega (the song and video always got under my skin)
Anything by Billy Idol!
Oh, and I love that someone mentioned Billy Squier
"My Kinda Lover" rocks!!!! ;D
ETA: How about "I've Got a Crush on You" by The Jets? That song is so 80s to me.

The 80s college boyfriend I mentioned before? When it became common knowledge that he was interested in me, my two friends and I danced around her dorm room to "Big Country" to celebrate! AND, when he and I started dating - our song? "Whisper to a Scream"! This is freaky in a good way! Wow, I didn't even know anyone in the 80s who liked that song besides me!
