I googled as well and if he married her, the estate would go to his male cousin? But if he dies without an heir, it still goes to his male cousin, right? I don't see the issue. 'Issue' I see what you did there!

Yup. Just get married. Who cares about an estate? He won't have to be responsible for the upkeep. This is a no-brainer.
These faux royals need to get over themselves.

Gustav also gives up the money, in that case, the way I read it.

There was one Romanov descendant, Paul Ilyinsky, who became a US citizen and later was mayor of Palm Beach, Florida. He was asked about the Russian throne and replied, "I am an American and I already have a job to which I was elected. I am the mayor."
I think the vast majority of the Romanovs alive today have just moved on and make no issue of their heritage.

There are a few who are still slugging it out in the trenches, like Maria, but most of them seem to have gotten on with their lives as regular citizens. The Russian government isn't going to declare anyone the victor, so the problem will eventually likely go away.

For fans of Tina Brown's Diana Chronicles, a new one called the Palace Papers is coming next spring. It's basically the Royals post Diana, or everything we have covered here since our inception and then some. I have only ever read two Diana books, this one and Sally Bedell Smith's. This should be a good one.

I'm a couple years late for posting this, but Prince Gustav was finally able to marry his long-time love Carina Axelsson! linkThe German courts settled the inheritance issue in his favor, so he would not lose the estate if they did marry. They've since had two children and seem to be very happy together. I'm glad his awful old grandfather didn't get away with ruining their happiness.
