Because the pregnancy was quite a shock in the otherwise perfectly calm, crisisfree and rather conservative Luxembourg. No really, this caused quite a few headlines in Luxembourg when the news leaked that he a) met a commoner while serving in the army, b) had her knocked up and c) they were both teens (19). And I think he renounced to not cause any other future problems, for the whole ordeal was frowned upon.

Wow. Controversy in Luxembourg? That seems like the most crisis-free royal house around?

Can the royal family sue Al-Fayed for slander or hell, treason for accusing Prince Phillip of murder?

Slander/libel, possibly. He's not a British citizen so treason's out.

Are the Royal Family not British citizens/subjects?

No, Al Fayed isn't. Even though he's been trying to get a British passport for ages, it has been denied again and again.

I'm an idiot. I don't even know how I confused myself.
Didn't Fayed get his Royal Warrant yanked?
