She would so much more attractive if she were as sweet as many of the characters she plays. But seriously, I do love the girl's spunk. She'll grow into it and will eventually learn to be more tactful. But in a way, I can forgive her arrogance because she is really spectacular.

I agree, atpeacewithme. She often says stuff that makes me raise my eyebrows, and then I pause and remember myself at 19 - convinced I knew it all, affecting that whole, incredibly tiresome 'world weary' thing, intoxicated by my newly discovered power over men (due to my being female and 19). I'll give her a pass, for now.
I also admire her luscious, non-skeletal body and admire her for being able to resist the pressure to diet herself down to a skeleton.

Although I was probably 10X worse with my obnoxious know-it-all attitude. *sigh* Scarlett just makes me shake my head and think "Kiddo. You haven't got a clue." She's a lusciously beautiful girl with a lovely screen presence. But she is very much A GIRL. Now if she's still talking like that at Fishstick's age I'll take issue.

OMG, I'd never read that before. I positively hate her. I hope she gets wrinkles and cellulite and loses her teeth.

I was sort of willing to give her a pass until I read that quote. God, that's sickening. She is a perfect match for Woody Allen....I now totally believe that BI that they hooked up while filming Match Point.

Generally speaking, I cut her some slack, but I do think there is a little more going on that "self-absorbed 19 year old." I find it pretty telling that Bill Murray apparently can't stand her - not that he is any picnic himself, but he strikes me as the type who does not suffer fools very well. I think it is also telling that Sophia Coppola doesn't seem all that fond of her either.
I'll give her a few more years to realize that some pretty stupid stuff has flown out of her mouth, and that she is not, in fact, God's gift to humanity (or more specifically, middle-aged men). Right now she's 19, she's famous, she's hot, and she has quite the body, so she probably does have men drooling all over her. She just doesn't realize how shallow and superficial the whole thing is and that if she passed them up, they'll gladly substitute the next pair of young boobs for her. She isn't giving them anything special, nothing that any other hot teenager willing to get it on with an older dude can provide.
I'll give her a few years to work that out - if she still talks like that at 25, then by all means - slap the snot out of her and ask her if she feels dead inside yet. Again, I think it was Bill Murray who said that when you get famous, you can act like a jerk for a few years while you let it all go to your head, then you need to settle down and realize what's real and what's important. When you don't, that's when you get in trouble. I hope he dropped that little nugget of wisdom on Scar-Jo on the set of "lost in Translation" and I hope she listened.

For what it's worth, I've seen remarks just as ugly and depressing about women from famed feminists, especially Simone de Beauvoir. I actually stopped reading The Second Sex because of how hideous she made everything about being a woman sound, let alone denied the possibility of anything beautiful between men and women. She makes similar remarks about how women have an intense relationship with beauty, their only currency in the world, and how they wither into nothingness and inefficacy when it leaves them. There's a whole section about how women are likely to feel resentful tension with their daughters because they are blooming into the prime and power of life while their mothers are "decaying."
In summary, I think ScarJo's comment is silly and a bit pretentious and I disagree with it, but I think she's attempting to make a philosophical statement which is at least internally coherent. Why does that mean she deserves to be slapped? She seems to be saying that women have an internal signal of life's transitions and mortality that men don't really experience, and that being around a woman who is too young for that signal can help guys get a clue that they aren't at the same place in life as the young woman is. I can't tell if the last part is just an eye-roll inducing pickup attempt for middle aged men, or a subtle diss of them.
