How ironic that during the regular season, the Heat cut a guard from Puerto Rico only to be beaten by another Puerto Rican guard in the final.
In the words of one Dirk Nowitzki: "Schadenfreude, baby!"

Hello.........
I am only checking this out because I've been really excited about Jeremy Lin.
Is anyone else out there?

I've never voluntarily watched a game in my life either and yet, I sat through Knicks vs. Lakers (my adopted home city vs. my real hometown) last Friday. I am also Asian and went to school near Boston so this makes me even more excited.

I've been following it too after not watching NBA for years. While I am excited to see him do well I find some of the coverage off-putting. Its almost like some people are incredulous that an Asian guy could be good at basketball. And he has one bad game and ESPN runs the headline "A Chink in the Armor" Ugh. Really? A chink? They took it off their website and apologized right away but the fact that they actually thought that was clever in the first place just makes me see red.

Actually basketball is one of the biggest sports in China and many think that it will be the new hot bed for talent.

I honestly don't think that the headline writer meant to be clever or make a racist joke. "A chink in the armor" is a not-uncommon idiomatic phrase that has been used in the sports world plenty of times before. IMO, the writer just used a cliche without thinking of the ramifications. THAT SAID, I still think he possibly deserved to be fired on grounds of gross incompetence. There is no way that he wasn't aware of all the racism and controversy swirling around Lin's media coverage. No way. He should have stopped to think before okaying the headline. I could overlook someone who isn't a writer for using the phrase without paying attention, but someone whose job it is to work with the English language should have known better.

How did that even go to press? If the writer didn't catch why the wording of the headline was (obviously) not a good idea, how come no one else did?
