I think Russia got really lucky (or maybe “lucky”) in the group stage and knockout—they’re good but nowhere near Croatia. Thinking Croatia might be a tad motivated. |

Russia's first goal was truly beautiful. I don't really have a favorite in this match--I had a long grudge against Croatia for a thing I turned out of to be inaccurate about (sorry, Croatia), but Russia is the underdog AND the home team. I think Russia will run out of energy, but this could be a real surprise.

I had not factored this nail biter into my day. To keep a team that’s literally on steroids with a home crowd at bay, Croatia played very well. I thought the hamstring injury to Subašić would be their undoing.
Drama indeed.
Now watch the Russian team manager get whacked by Putin's little poisoners...

Just cos I'm still bitter about the Thierry Henry handball that ousted ROI in qualifiers yeeears ago. I'm all ABF (anyone but France)
So while I'm supporting England I'm not sure i want them to win outright because the press and telly pundits would be insufferable for ever more.
So cmon England but if its France v Croatia
Then its cmon Croatia but its probably now going to be won by France!

I am DVRing the match tomorrow and I can't even believe England has a chance to be in a World Cup final!
I just hope it's a good match and no one is hurt. I keep trying to explain to my BF what a huge deal this whole thing is and I cannot find a USA comparison, much less equivalent. I don't love soccer but I guess my horrible ex's Chelsea FC obsession, combined with years of youth soccer and competitive soccer tournaments, rubbed off a little.
The World Cup is just different, anyway. And I love a great underdog narrative.

Oxynia, how are you feeling? I thought Belgium would at least score--they had so many people behind them, and I didn't see France winning in regular time. There was also the "they beat Brazil!" Hype but I didn't put a whole lot of stock in that, and I'm kind of sad to see I was right.
To take this down a bit in town, Philippe Courtois makes me laugh because he looks like an elongated Poirot, and I enjoyed the Belgian fan who was dressed like a packet of frites. If it helps, it looks like a Belgian was poised as the current leader of the Tour de France....
I think England is going to win against Croatia, but who the hell knows.

TTMR is dying to have an England vs. France World Cup. So many Hundred Years War jokes to make. Or not because I can't think of any, but someone probably will.
